POLICE NOTES: Hat Trick Arrest, Seeking Possible Stalker, and More Car Thefts

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

On Thursday a 45-year-old Guelph man was located downtown and arrested for assault for an incident in the west end last week where a store employee was assaulted while trying to stop a shoplifter.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft under $5,000 and breaching a probation order after police were called by a business near Victoria and Grange on Monday morning where a man pulled out a knife and gestured towards employees before leaving the store with items he was shoplifting..

Break-Ins

Shortly after 8 am on Wednesday, police were called to a commercial plaza near Laird and Southgate after an employee arrived to discover damage at two neighbouring business. Security video revealed two men attending the businesses just after 1 am and breaking the doors to enter them. A cash drawer, tablets, phones and approximately $1,000 worth of product was reported missing. Both suspects were described as male, 18-35 years of age and wearing hoodies with the hoods up and gloves. One was also wearing a mask. Shortly before 11 am on Monday police were called to an address near Dublin and Green where a woman reported that while she was attending an online lecture upstairs she heard several loud bangs and then glass breaking. Witnesses described the male who tried to break in as white with brown hair and wearing all grey and possibly red shoes. A 36-year-old Guelph man was arrested for break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and breach of probation after he was caught driving a car stolen from a break and enter last Saturday morning.

Drugs

A 47-year-old Guelph man was arrested for possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and he was also charged with trafficking a controlled substance after further investigation which included reviewing footage from surveillance cameras. Last Saturday morning, police saw two men outside a business and noted one crouched over a scale possibly cutting something. A search revealed quantities of suspected pink and blue fentanyl as well as empty baggies, the scale with drug residue and cash.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 77-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after being called to the area of Willow and Dawson Road. He failed a road test and further tests revealed he had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after a vehicle was stopped near Massey and Elmira Friday afternoon. After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 34-year-old Hamilton man was charged with impaired driving last Saturday morning after reports of a pickup being driven erratically downtown. The truck was found unattended in a driveway on Gordon Street, and a man walking in the area matched witness descriptions. He confirmed he was the owner of the vehicle.


A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after police received calls last Saturday complaining about a vehicle being drive erratically on Speedvale Avenue, and caught up with it parked and running in a driveway on Imperial Road with the driver apparently asleep behind the wheel.

Theft

At approximately 6:15 pm on Monday, three suspects entered a business near Eramosa and Stevenson and stole $950 worth of fragrances and hair products. They were described as:

  1. Male, 30, 5’9”, medium build, blond hair, black jacket, shorts and running shoes
  2. Male, 25, 5’2”, thin build, blond hair, black jacket, black jeans, white shoes
  3. Female, late 20s, 5’8”, thin build, blond hair, black hoodie, blue shorts, black shoes

Just over an hour later, three male suspects entered a business at Stone Road Mall. One appeared to act as a lookout while the other two stole more than $1,000 worth of fragrances and cosmetics. They were described as:

  1. Approximately 40, light brown skin, 6’2” with a medium to large build, short black hair, facial hair, black polo-style shirt, black shorts, black baseball cap, small shoulder bag
  2. Approximately 40, light brown skin, 6’0”, medium build, shaved black hair, goatee, grey and black jacket, light wash denim shorts, black running shoes, small shoulder bag
  3. Approximately 40, light brown skin, 5’9”, thin build, short black hair and facial hair, grey and black jacket, black ripped jeans, black and white sneakers

Just after 3 am on Wednesday police were dispatched to a business near Paisley and Imperial where they found the glass front door smashed and ajar. Security video showed a white Chevrolet Camaro with black bumpers arriving at approximately 2:35 am, and a man exited the passenger side and used a hammer to break the glass door. Inside he broke two glass display cases, removing a quantity of watches and other jewelry. The suspect is described as black with a medium build. He was wearing a black and white hoodie with writing on the front, blue track pants, black and white running shoes, a black baseball cap and black face mask. He was carrying a black duffel bag. Police are investigating after three men targeted the Rexall at Speedvale and Woolwich twice last month to steal pain management devices, first on April 22 at 2:30 pm where they stole nearly $600 in devices, and then two days late when they stole another. The suspect who entered the business both times is described as a white male in his late 30s or 40s, average build and height with “stringy” hair almost to his shoulders and tattoos on his right arm and upper torso. During one of the incidents he was wearing chains around his neck, bracelets on both wrists and white-framed sunglasses. A 50-year-old Woodbridge man was charged with theft under $5,000 on Thursday afternoon after police were called to a Woodlawn West store where staff observed the man concealing a large number of allergy medications, smoking cessation devices and digital thermometers in his backpack and leaving the store. Investigation revealed he is currently accused of theft in several jurisdictions across Ontario and Quebec. The stolen merchandise was recovered as well as two electronic devices believed to be used to jam retail security systems.

Theft (Auto)

Just before 6:30 am on Tuesday, a resident near Rodgers and Moss reported her grey 2024 Toyota Highlander had been stolen from the driveway overnight. The caller found broken glass on the driveway. Also on Tuesday at around 8:15 am a resident near MacAlister and Dudley reported his blue 2022 Toyota Tundra had been stolen from his driveway. Broken glass was left behind. If you have any information call Constable Anthony Hall at 519-824-1212, ext. 7582, or email anthall [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Also Tuesday, Guelph Police learned a Tundra pickup stolen from the east end in late January had been located in Richmond Hill. Its vehicle identification number (VIN) had been altered.


On Monday morning, a resident of Silurian Drive called to report her black 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander was stolen overnight. Security video showed suspects approaching the vehicle a number of times before it was stolen. At 12:24 am, a man described as white with a medium build and wearing shorts and a hoodie was dropped off by a light-coloured four-door sedan and appeared to be looking at the SUV while speaking on the phone after suspects had already approached the car several times. More than an hour later, two men were dropped off by a dark SUV and accessed the vehicle by smashing a window. Both appeared to be carrying corded electrical devices. The men left and minutes later one was dropped off a second time and stole the Highlander. Police are investigating after a Guelph man reported his 2022 Volvo Aro had been stolen from a parking lot on Southgate Drive last Friday morning and it was tracked via GPS to an address in Mississauga, where it was located Sunday afternoon. Traffic

A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving on Thursday just before midnight when the Traffic Unit clocked a 2014 Porsche travelling 110 kilometres per hour in a posted 50 zone while patrolling near Paisley and Stephanie.


Two motorcyclists were transported to a Hamilton trauma centre following separate collisions in Guelph two hours apart Tuesday evening. At 6:35 pm a motorcyclist lost control and slid into a curb near Flemming and Creekside; a 60-year-old Guelph man was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Then, under two hours later, a 57-year-old Guelph man was riding an e-bike when he hit gravel and lost control, flipping over the handlebars near Elizabeth and Duke. He was also transported to a Hamilton trauma centre with serious injuries.

Other Notes

At approximately 4:10 pm on Monday, a landscaper working in the area of Silvercreek and Paisley reported two young children approached his crew and said they were being followed by a woman. Workers did see a woman but she left the area on foot. She was described as Asian, early 20s, five feet tall, wearing a light blue sweater, grey track pants, black shoes. The children were assisted to a nearby apartment building by a member of the landscape crew. Officers responded and checked the area but were unable to locate the children or the woman. A 26-year-old Guelph man was arrested again for failing to comply with an undertaking, his third arrest in as many weeks. This is the same person charged last week for trying to urinate on people and/or trying to grab women while touching himself downtown. Last Saturday he was arrested for being back downtown after being barred from returning and then on Tuesday he was back harassing customers and staff at one business and he followed a woman as she tried to cross the street.
