POLICE NOTES: Cold Cases Closed, Road Rage, and Urination Mischief.

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

At approximately 6:45 pm on Thursday, police were called to a business near Silvercreek and Speedvale where staff reported that a man was seen in the store placing items into his backpack. The loss prevention employee followed him outside and attempted to arrest him, but the man pushed the employee into a concrete pillar and fled. Responding officers were able to determine the man’s identity, but he has not yet been located.


A 21-year-old Guelph woman was charged with three counts of assault with a weapon and administering a noxious substance as well as assault and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a woman used dog spray against a man she was arguing with in St. George’s Square. She then sprayed two others who came to the man’s defence. A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and failing to comply with an undertaking after he assaulted the victim when he was down.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and two counts each of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Tuesday morning. Police were called to Fife Road after a man drew a knife on another man during an argument. Police found a drywall knife with a curved blade and a plastic brass knuckles-type weapon in the suspect’s pocket when he was arrested.


A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault causing bodily harm Sunday afternoon after one man punched another in the face causing a nose bleed following a verbal argument.


A 15-year-old Guelph boy was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of uttering threats and four counts of breaching court orders after a house party in the east end Friday night. The suspect was upset at another teen for putting his arm around a girl, and then pulled a knife and treated the two victim.

Break-Ins

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property and two counts of breaching a probation order on Thursday morning after police received calls about a suspicious man in the area of Waverley and Balmoral. One resident reported that a man had entered his unlocked truck and removed items including a garage door opener, which he used to enter the garage.


A 27-year-old Guelph man has been arrested for break and enter, three counts of possessing stolen property and several counts of driving while prohibited for a break-in on Cole Road in April. The suspects stole two laptops, several pairs of shoes and the keys to two vehicles which were then stolen. Both were later recovered by police. The investigation is still ongoing.

Drugs

Impaired Driving

A 56-year-old Guelph man was charged with refusing to provide a sample and his licence was suspended for 90 day after police were called to a north-end variety store Wednesday night where staff reported that a customer who appeared to be intoxicated purchased alcohol and drove away. He was asked to provide a breath sample but repeatedly refused to do so.


A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and several Highway Traffic Act offences when just before midnight Saturday when officers in an unmarked vehicle were passed by a speeding SUV which made an aggressive lane change, causing the officer to brake to avoid a collision.


A 32-year-old Burlington man was charged with impaired driving on Sunday morning after a speed enforcement near Woolwich and Speedvale where a driver was clocked travelling at 68 kilometre per hour in a 40 zone.


A 54-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Monday evening after an unconscious man was found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked at an address on Woodlawn Road East.

Theft

At approximately 6 am on Friday, a resident in the Rickson Ridge neighbourhood reported his black 2024 Lexus 500H had been taken from the driveway. The caller had both sets of keys and reportedly there was broken glass left behind. On Wednesday, a 23-year-old Scarborough man was arrested and charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of breaching a release order in connection to a case from October 2023. A stolen BMW was spotted at a Guelph motel and while police took an 18-year-old female suspect into custody that day, the man she was with got away.


A 45-year-old Hamilton man was arrested for possession of stolen property over $5,000 in the case of a stolen pick-up truck that was found in a Woodlawn West parking lot in March 2023. Fingerprints and DNA recovered from inside the vehicle pointed to two suspects.

Traffic

A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving Tuesday evening after the Traffic Unit was patrolling near Wellington and the Hanlon clocked a vehicle doing 111 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone.


A Cambridge man was arrested Friday for dangerous driving, mischief under $5,000 and stunt driving after a complaint on Thursday about a man driving through a construction zone on York Road. Another motorist pulled beside the complainant at a red light and began yelling at him, and then cut off the complainant, got out of his vehicle, yelled a threat, and then stomped on the front of the complainant’s vehicle, causing more than $1,000 in damage.

Other Notes

A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with committing an indecent act and mischief after police received several calls Friday night about a man approaching people downtown, trying to urinate on them and trying to grab women while touching himself. None of them were physically injured.
