POLICE NOTES: Kidnapping, Distraction Theft and More Indecent Acts

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of uttering threats, theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property and two counts of breaching a probation order after a suspicious man on the University of Guelph campus pulled a knife on an employee there when questioned about ownership of a bicycle.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failing to comply with an undertaking and two counts each of breaching a probation order and breaching a weapons prohibition order on Tuesday morning after calls to police reported a man on a bicycle headed towards downtown with the barrel of a gun sticking out of his backpack. The man was located on Macdonell Street and a BB gun was recovered.


A 27-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for assault Monday after she was found sleeping in the hallway of a downtown business that morning. When security asked her to leave, she became belligerent and pushed the guard, causing him to fall against a door frame.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, plus a pellet gun was seized. On Sunday evening, police were called to the west end after a woman’s brother retrieved a black handgun and pointed it at her following an argument.


An 81-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault last Friday after police were called to a store on Woodlawn Road West where a customer punched the manager in the face when he refused to accept the return of an item. The suspect then refused to comply with police and had to be carried to a cruiser.


A 43-year-old Guelph man was arrested for kidnapping, forcible confinement, assault and criminal harassment last Saturday after an incident Friday night. A woman reported that she was driven home by a co-worker and was followed by a man she recognized as a regular customer. He asked her to enter his car to talk but then locked the doors and drove away from the area. He reportedly professed his love for the victim and ignored her pleas to let her out of the car. When she opened the door and attempted to jump out he physically restrained her. Eventually the victim was able to get out of the car and wave down another motorist for help. He then called the woman approximately 16 times in an effort to meet up and return belongings she had left in his car.

Break-Ins

On Tuesday morning, police were called to a store on Silvercreek North after the owner arrived to find the front door damaged and a large crack in the glass. Security video showed a man attending the business at 2:30 am and prying the door near the lock area with an unknown tool. He came back an hour later and tried again. The suspect was described as white with a medium build. He was wearing a black puffy jacket, black hoodie, black pants, red baseball cap, black and white shoes and a black medical mask. Just before 7 am last Saturday, a resident near Elmira and Speedvale reported that he awoke to find his front door standing open and that his dog and a pair of Nike AirForce shoes were reported missing. On Thursday, a 42-year-old London man was arrested in another jurisdiction and charged with five counts of break and enter and one count of possessing stolen property over $5,000 in relation to a series of incidents over one night in July 2022. In each occurrence, glass front doors were smashed to gain entry. Minor thefts were reported from three of the businesses.

Drugs

Impaired Driving

A 23-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and several Highway Traffic Act offences after turning left from Wellington to Gordon Street against two posted ‘no left turn’ signs due to construction on Thursday morning. She had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.


A 28-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and possessing a controlled substance on Monday afternoon after he ran out of gas while driving near Edinburgh and Wellington. While the driver was being tested, officers located a baggie containing suspected cocaine beside the driver’s seat.


A 17-year-old Guelph boy was charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and assault police on Wednesday evening after police received a report of a vehicle being driven erratically on Ingram crossed into oncoming traffic before mounting a curb. A second call reported the same car being driven erratically on Eramosa Road near downtown where police stopped it. Two passengers were passed out in the car, several vaping devices and an open bag of cannabis were found, and when the driver was taken to headquarters for drug testing, he refused to comply and twice kicked an officer in the leg.

Theft

On Monday afternoon police were called to a business near Woodlawn and Elmira after security video showed a man inside the secure lot at 6:38 pm on Sunday. Tools were reported stolen from one vehicle and another had its windows smashed. The suspect was described as wearing a black sweater with the hood up and white logos on it, brown pants, white and black shoes, black gloves and a face covering. At approximately 12:40 am on Thursday, police were called to a store near Gordon and Wellington where a man entered the, selected two 12-packs of alcohol from a shelf and headed for the exit. When an employee tried to stop him, he was pushed and struck in the face. The suspect was described as a male in his 20s wearing a black hoodie, dark-coloured baseball cap and blue medical mask. Just before 4 pm, a victim in her 60s called police after she left a bank near Eramosa and Stevenson. She placed her purse in the car when she saw a man standing near the back of her car. He yelled that there was something wrong with the car and pointed at some wires hanging down. While the complainant went to look at the wires she saw a second man enter the vehicle and grab the envelope of cash she had just withdrawn. She chased the men through the parking lot and found the envelope of cash on the ground. Both men were described as possibly Middle Eastern. One was in his 40s, approximately 5’4” with a large belly and wearing a white t-shirt. The second was in his 20s, 5’10” wearing a baseball cap and black medical mask. At approximately 4:20 am on Sunday, Waterloo Regional Police found a burned vehicle in a farmer’s field. The car belonged to a Guelph resident, and when officers checked the owner’s residence on Ironwood Road, she said that she last saw the car parked in front of her house Saturday night. Traffic

A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while prohibited and driving while suspended after the driver of a van exited a parking lot on Victoria Road. Police stopped the van and after providing a false name, the driver identified himself and it was determined he is currently bound by three different driving prohibitions.

Other Notes

On Saturday evening a caller reported she had been driving on Edinburgh Road South near the Speed River when she observed a man walking with his pants down and masturbating. He was described as white, late 30s with shoulder-length dark blonde hair and wearing a green baseball cap, white sweater, white shorts, white sneakers and a backpack.

And then, just after 7 pm on Sunday, police were called to York Road near the covered bridge. A woman reported she was jogging when she saw a nude man walking into a wooded area. He was described as white, 30s with a beard and wearing a green hat and backpack. It is not known if it is the same male as the Saturday call, but if you have an information on either incident call the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212.
