POLICE NOTES: Quick Change, Attempted Meat Heist, and Sports Cards Recovered

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 19-year-old Goderich man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, causing a disturbance and public intoxication after two cousins got into a fight at a family gathering near Woodlawn and Victoria last Friday evening. One of the men pulled out a hunting-style knife and held it towards the other.

Break-Ins

Just before 1:30 am on Thursday, witnesses called police after seeing a man smashed a glass front door and entered a business near Woodlawn and Woolwich. He exited a short time later carrying the cash register and ran from the area. Security video showed the man throwing a rock several times against the door until it broke through. He was described as approximately 5’6” with a thin build and wearing all black. He was last seen running eastbound on Woodlawn Road East. Just after 7 am on Sunday, police were called by a security guard to a break-in at a business on Woolwich and Marilyn. Video showed a man arriving at 5:40 am and throwing the rock through the glass before kicking out the remaining glass and entering the business. A small amount of change was stolen. The suspect (see photo to left) was wearing a black hoodie with the hood up with a large letter “O” on the front and the word “OBEY” on the back. At approximately 6:30 am on Monday, police were called to a business on Speedvale and Imperial after someone gained access to the yard just before 10 pm Sunday and stole a white 2018 Chevrolet Silverado with a flatbed. The thief was caught on video reversing the truck through a gate and briefly dragging it before driving off. Pieces of taillights were found on the ground, suggesting the truck had rear-end damage. Just after 7 am last Friday, police were called to an address on Cole Road after a tenant awoke and discovered a rear door was open. Two MacBook computers and several pairs of shoes were missing from the home, and tenants discovered two vehicles had been stolen from the driveway: the 2006 Buick was later recovered parked near Willow and Imperial while the blue 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is still unaccounted for. A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with six counts of break and enter and two counts of breaching a probation order on Sunday morning after police were called to a residence near Woolwich and Speedvale. The suspect was breaking into a shed and had previously tried to break into three other sheds and two garages in the same neighbourhood.

Drugs

A 56-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of breaching probation and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking. After arresting two men in the area of Willow and Silvercreek Wednesday morning, officers executed a search warrant at an apartment in the area and recovered approximately $4,000 worth of suspected cocaine and fentanyl as well as drug paraphernalia.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 59-year-old Guelph man was arrested for dangerous driving, flight from police and driving while suspended last Thursday afternoon after being picked up on an automated licence plate reader downtown. Anyone who witnessed a blue Kia being driven erratically, or has video, is being asked to contact Sergeant Mike Alarie at malarie [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 49-year-old Ariss man was charged with impaired driving and driving with open alcohol Wednesday morning after a witness called to report a possible impaired driver at a plaza on Stone Road West. He had an open beer can in the console, and more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.


A 27-year-old Rockwood man was charged with impaired driving and driving without insurance last Friday afternoon. A police patrol near Gordon and Clairfields was alerted to a possible impaired driver, and they determined that the car had an expired permit and was uninsured. Testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

During an investigation into break and enters on Sunday officers recovered two binders full of collectible baseball and hockey cards, including one unique card which will be memorable to the owner. A store was robbed of several pain management devices on two different occasions last week from a business at Speedvale and Woolwich; three were stolen Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 pm and another was stolen on Thursday. Two men kept watch while one man went inside. He’s described as a white male in his late 30s or 40s, average build and height with “stringy” hair almost to his shoulders and tattoos on his right arm and upper torso. During one of the incidents he was wearing chains around his neck, bracelets on both wrists and white-framed sunglasses. At approximately 11:30 am on April 11, a man entered Metro on Edinburgh Road South and tried to steal $300 in salmon and frozen lamb in a black duffel bag. He was described as approximately 30, six feet, 180 pounds with a tanned complexion and black hair. He was wearing a brown jacket, blue jeans and brown shoes and left in a newer black Ram pickup (see photo at top of article). Traffic

Two police officers were injured Thursday afternoon when their marked cruiser collided with another vehicle. The officers were travelling northbound on Victoria near York when the driver of an SUV pulled out of a parking lot into the path of the cruiser. They were transported to  the hospital with injuries that are not considered serious, and the driver of the SUV was not injured. The investigation is ongoing.

Other Notes

On Wednesday morning officers were called to the area of Woodlawn and Edinburgh after a Rogerstechnician discovered approximately 40 feet of cable had been cut down. It is believed the suspects believed the wire to be copper, and upon realizing it was steel just left the area empty-handed. Damage is estimated at $5,000 to $10,000. Just before 9 am on Monday police were called to a business near Stone and Scottsdale after staff discovered damage to the units. Sometime over the Easter weekend suspects entered a fenced area at the rear of the business. Copper wire and internal mechanical components were cut and removed from the three air conditioning units, rendering them inoperable and likely beyond repair. A 49-year-old Guelph man has been arrested for mischief over $5,000 for incident at a seniors’ residence on Raymond Street early this month where nearly $29,000 in damage was done to building. Four cameras were ripped from the ceiling, and the laundry room was flooded.
