POLICE NOTES: Snowball Fight Turns Violent, Major Theft Damage and Stunt Driving

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

On Thursday a 42-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose for an incident in late January where paramedics responded to a south end residence where a woman had fallen. When they attempted to remove alcohol from her so they could assess her, the woman brandished a large kitchen knife at the paramedics.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of uttering threats, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of breaching a probation order on Thursday after police became aware of social media posts targeting City of Guelph employees and a local daycare centre. The man was stopped by police as he was seen walking towards the daycare the morning after making the posts.


A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested downtown early Wednesday morning for an incident last month where a dispute over a debt lead to an assault and a machete being held to a man’s throat. The suspect resisted arrest and at the police station kicked an officer in the leg. He is charged with several assault, weapons and threatening charges.


A 41-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault Sunday afternoon for an incident just after 3 pm last Thursday where police were called to St. George’s Square after a man was throwing snowballs at a youth. When another man told him to stop it turned into a fight where the victim was punched and kicked in the head several times. The victim sustained several cuts to his face and hand but declined medical attention.


An 18-year-old Guelph man was charged with carrying a concealed weapon after a High School Resource Officer found five folding knives in the possession of a high school student.


A 24-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. Last Friday afternoon, police responded to Edinburgh and Paisley were a shirtless man was chasing another unknown man while wielding a set of bicycle forks. Instead, he approached a vehicle that had broken down, and told the female driver to leave the area immediately or she would be assaulted, while holding up the bicycle forks in a threatening manner.

Break-Ins

Just after 5 am on Tuesday, a man broke two windows at a business near Elizabeth and Victoria in an attempt to break in, but all he was able to accomplish was causing $600 in damage. The suspect was described as a white male with a medium to large build and wearing a black puffy jacket with white triangular logo on the left shoulder and left chest, a blue hoodie, dark grey or black pants, a face mask, white heavy-duty work gloves and an orange toque. A 52-year-old Etobicoke man was arrested at the scene of a break early Friday morning at a business near Massey and Royal. He was charged with break and enter, possessing break-in tools and possessing stolen property for trying to steal more than 70 aluminum posts with a value of more than $50,000 with two others, a 27-year-old Etobicoke man and a 25-year-old Toronto man, who turned themselves in to police on Saturday.

Drugs

A 45-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, obstructing police, two counts of driving while prohibited and five counts of breaching a bail order last Saturday afternoon after a man was seen in the parking lot of Stone Road Mall smoking from a bong in the driver’s seat of a car. After chasing the suspect around the mall, officers recovered approximately $1,700 worth of suspected fentanyl and cocaine, more than $1,200 in cash, measuring scales and two knives.

Impaired Driving

A 41-year-old Puslinch man was charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus, dangerous operation, breach of recognizance and failure to comply with undertaking. On Wednesday afternoon, a car left a bar near Victoria and York and it was then crashed into a snowbank in a commercial parking lot near Woodlawn and Royal.


A 48-year-old Guelph woman was charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus after a minor car collision near the intersection of Willow and Applewood on Wednesday.


A 71-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving Tuesday afternoon after police were called to a report of a possible impaired driver near Gordon and Wellington.


A 37-year-old Cambridge man was charged with impaired driving Tuesday evening after he was found sleeping in a car blocking the driveway at a south end business. When he was released from custody the man was angry and punched the side mirror off a vehicle parked outside the police station. He was re-arrested for mischief under $5,000.


A 59-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving Friday evening after police received reports of someone driving erratically, at times speeding in reverse in a residential area near Speedvale and Waverley. Officers located the vehicle and pulled it over, noting the driver was shirtless and had urinated on himself.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving last Saturday afternoon after a collision near Watson and Fleming where a family vehicle was struck from behind by a driver who was showing obvious signs of impairment.


A 44-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving last evening after a traffic stop on Woolwich Street. The driver was showing signs of impairment and officers observed open beer cans in the centre console and empty cans on the floor of the vehicle. The driver repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample.

Theft

Police are looking for help finding two men who entered a business near Stone and Edinburgh on December 29 and stole six Samsung S9 tablets. The first suspect was described as a male with a heavy build, glasses and a beard and wearing a black jacket, grey pants, grey running shoes and a black hat. The second male was wearing a black jacket, green pants and a grey winter hat and carrying a reusable bag with polka dots. A black 2017 BMW X5 containing a quantity of camping and fishing equipment was taken from a residence near Waterloo and Beechwood last week. The owner found it missing just after 8 am on Monday. On Monday afternoon police were called to a construction site near Speedvale and Kathleen where two homes under construction had been entered over the weekend and copper wire was cut out and removed. The value of the wire is about $20, but the damage caused cost as much as $80,000. Police are investigating two break-ins at the same Stone Road Mall business.

The first was just before 9 am February 15, two males entered the mall and went to the Wireless Wave kiosk where a tool was used to force open drawers and steal a number of phones with a total value of $7,800. Both men were described as possibly South Asian in their late 20s with chin strap beards and goatees. One was approximately 6’1” and 200 pounds and wearing khaki-coloured Adidas track pants, a grey jacket and black shoes. The other was shorter and wearing a silver jacket, burgundy track pants and white running shoes. They fled in a newer navy blue Hyundai Elantra.

The second incident was at around 7:40 am on February 27, where a witness called after seeing a man breaking into the same business. He fled while the witness was on the phone with police and was seen getting into the passenger side of a black vehicle, possibly a Toyota Corrolla. Cash and a number of phones were stolen. The suspect who entered the business was described as a brown-skinned male with black hair and a thin beard and wearing a black jacket with a white collar over a light blue hoodie, dark pants, blue and white Nike sneakers and a red Ferrari hat. He was seen getting into a black car driven by a second person.

A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with robbery on Wednesday for a incident last December at a store near Woodlawn and Woolwich where an employee tried to prevent a lighter valued at $12 from being stolen. This led to an adult male pushing the manager and a physical altercation that resulted in the male spitting in the manager’s face before fleeing.

Traffic

A 17-year-old Kitchener man was been charged with flight from police, dangerous operation, drive motor vehicle perform stunt, and speeding 100 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone on Wednesday for an incident on February 21 near Edinburgh and Gordon. Police tried to stop a speeding car but it drove away even faster, swerved through, cut through a red light and barely avoid a head-on collision.


A 27-year-old man was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm after police were called to Victoria and Elizabeth last Sunday evening. A 16-year-old boy was stuck while crossing the street sustaining head and leg injuries. He was transported to a Hamilton hospital as a precaution but his injuries were not believed to be serious.

Other Notes

A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with committing an indecent act after a man entered a business on Speedvale Avenue East and exposed himself to several female employees. During the hour before this incident, police had received two other calls about a man walking in the area with his genitals and buttocks exposed.
