City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the February 19, 2025 Meeting?

It’s been a while since we’ve had an orientation, or workshop, meeting of city council, so what have we got here? In a word: “Construction”. You probably know that old joke about how there are only two seasons in Canada, and as we now wallow in the depths of winter, city council will start looking to that other season, and there’s going to be a lot of it in the months and years to come. At this meeting, council will dig into all things construction!

NOTE #1: Since this is a workshop/orientation meeting, there are no delegations.

NOTE #2: In addition to meeting in-person, this meeting will also be live-streamed on the City of Guelph’s website here.

Construction Improvement Program – There’s a lot of construction happening in Guelph in the years to come through the $2.3 billion capital budget for the next 10 years; from a $360 million infrastructure renewal backlog that needs to be filled to pressing and urgent need for more housing that will need to service with new roads, lines, and pipes. There are a lot of considerations when it comes to projects this big, and the goal of this workshop is to talk about the challenges that come with all that building, and how staff plan on addressing them.

So when council meets for this workshop, they will be guided through how construction projects are scooped, designed and delivered; how staff get the most bang for the City’s buck; how they intend on getting construction done quickly; how construction will impact residents and businesses; and how they intend on keeping the community up-to-date with all the construction projects around the city as they’re happening. Council will offer their feedback about what kind of construction information will be helpful, and the best ways to improve communications about construction.
