POLICE NOTES: Fire Investigation, Online Harassment and More Tundras Taken

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, breaching a probation order, failing to leave when directed and soliciting in an aggressive manner under the Safe Streets Act on Tuesday. At 11 am, police were called to a business near Stone and Edinburgh  where a man was aggressively panhandling in the drive-thru and he pulled a large knife on the manager when confronted.


A 22-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault police after spiting on an officer Monday. Police were called to a downtown social service agency at the request of staff to speak to the man who was acting erratically.


A 63-year-old Guelph man was immediately placed under arrest for assault police and refusing to leave a premises when directed early Monday morning when police were asked to remove a man from a downtown agency where he had previously been banned. A short time later the man was walking out followed by officers when he turned and attempted to hit one of them.

Break-Ins

A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and breaching a probation order for a November break-in at a Waterloo Avenue apartment building. The suspect was identified through security video and on Sunday afternoon he was located downtown and arrested.

Drugs

Impaired Driving

A 70-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation and his licence was suspended for 90 days on Thursday afternoon after a man was reported drinking while sitting in his car near Gordon and Clairfields. The man was sitting in a pickup with an open beer in the console and a case of beer on the passenger side.


A 63-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and his licence was suspended for 90 days after police saw someone leaving a bar downtown on Wednesday afternoon. When the vehicle was pulled over, the driver had an alcohol odour on his breath and tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a weapon, careless driving and novice driver having alcohol in his system after a collision downtown last Friday right outside police headquarters. During a search incident a spring-assisted knife was located in the man’s pocket.

Theft

Police are investigating after a smash-and-grab Friday afternoon at a jewellery store in Stone Road Mall. At approximately 5:30 pm, several suspects went into the store, smashed display cases and stole merchandise before fleeing the area in a vehicle. Just after midnight on Wednesday, police were called to a business near Norfolk and Quebec where a silver Mazda 3 hatchback  was taken. The owner had started the car with a remote started and then came out five minute later to find it gone. A witness  gave police a description of the suspect: Male, 5’11” with a medium build, wearing a dark jacket with a hood and carrying a large flashlight. Police are investigating after approximately $10,000 worth of wire was stolen from a business near Speedvale and Royal after employees discovered on Monday that a storage container had been entered by cutting off a padlock and that a number of spools of wire were stolen. At approximately 4:45 am, police were called to a home near Starwood and Law where a homeowner noticed a rear window smashed on his 2024 Toyota Tundra. There were two vehicles stopped in front of the victim’s house which left the scene when he opened the door. The truck’s console was open and the steering column damaged. One of the suspect vehicles was described as a dark-coloured pick-up, possibly with dual rear wheels. A Toyota Tundra was stolen late Saturday or early Sunday from the area of Water and Forest Hill. It is described as a black 2024 Tundra with a solid tonneau cover and aftermarket tube-style running boards. It also had a quantity of power tools inside. It is not known if the two incidents are related. A 38-year-old Guelph man and 27-year-old Guelph woman are each charged with possessing stolen property under $5,000, while the man was also charged with breaching a probation order after police did a sting. Some climbing equipment stolen from a Woolwich Street home last weekend was put up for sale online for $400 and police set up a meet.


A 39-year-old Guelph woman is charged with robbery on Tuesday night after trying to leave a store on Silvercreek Parkway North without paying for $2,800 worth of merchandise in her cart. This same person is currently before the courts for two similar incidents over the Christmas holidays.


On Monday, a 56-year-old Eden Mills man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and 10 counts of driving while prohibited in the theft of a car that was later involved in collision just outside of Guelph. A 35-year-old Guelph man was also arrested for their involvement in the crime on several charges including break and enter and motor vehicle theft.

Traffic

An 18-year-old Oxford County man was charged under the Criminal Code with failing to stop after an accident on Thursday morning after a head-on crash with a Guelph Transit bus on Ironwood near Cole.


A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, resisting arrest, two counts of possessing controlled substances, unauthorized possession of a weapon, two counts of breaching probation and several counts of driving while prohibited Wednesday. Early this month, police tried to pullover a truck in a drive-thru on Woodlawn, but the truck fled. This week, the Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit found the truck, and the driver, at a Waterloo Avenue address.

Other Notes

The Guelph Police Service and Guelph Fire Department are investigating a fire that caused significant smoke damage to a Waterloo Avenue apartment last Saturday night. A mattress fire had caused significant smoke damage to the unit and caused the temporary evacuation of a neighbouring unit while it was ventilated and underwent minor repairs. No physical injuries were reported. The fire is considered to be suspicious in origin and remains under investigation. A 18-year-old Chatham man was arrested for criminal harassment, uttering threats and obstructing police on Thursday after a Guelph woman this week reported that she had received approximately 80 calls from an unknown male. After declining many call attempts she answered but did not speak, prompting the caller to utter threats to attend her residence and harm her. Investigation revealed that the two are not known to each other and the man found the victim’s phone number on social media and began calling to see if she would answer.


On Tuesday a 57-year-old St. Mary’s woman was arrested for harassing communications for a series of harassing posts on Facebook starting earlier this month with calls to police about the welfare of two dogs at a south end home. The dogs’ owners reported several instances of people showing up and yelling at them, trying to gain access to their backyard and even flying a drone over their house and photographing it. The Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) visited the home several times and are satisfied the dogs are being properly cared for and are not in danger, but the Facebook harassment continued even after police asked them to take down the posts.
