There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Break-Ins
Police are investigating after three males broke into a basement apartment near Starwood and Grange at 1:30 am Thursday by kicking in a door while a family slept inside. The three were captured on security video and were described as:
- Tanned male, black puffy coat with white logo on the left chest, black hoodie with hood up, light-coloured shirt under the hoodie, black pants, black shoes, black baseball cap with white logo on front, blue medical mask
- Male wearing grey hoodie with white logo on the chest, black pants, black shoes with white stripes, blue latex gloves and blue medical mask
- Male wearing grey hoodie with ‘Essentials’ on the back in black writing, black sweatpants with white bear logo on the left leg, black gloves, grey boots, black mask

Just before 9 am on Wednesday, police were called to the now closed Lapointe-Fisher long-term care home near Metcalfe and Speedvale after the owner arrived and discovered damage inside. Investigation revealed unknown suspects had entered the building sometime overnight by prying open a door leading to the basement; several interior doors were also damaged and security cameras were either damaged or removed entirely. Monday morning police were called to a business near Silvercreek and Woodlawn after an employee arrived at work and found a broken window and damage inside caused sometime over the weekend. Two gold-plated watches, two laptops, cash and gift cards were reported missing. A 45-year-old Guelph man and a 39-year-old Guelph man are each charged with break and enter, possessing break-in tools and possessing stolen property after the Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit were called to a farm property near Mohawk Casino on Thursday afternoon. Two men were in a car next to a barn where plastic and copper were wire burning, and a search of the car revealed a large amount of stripped copper wire, as well as bolt cutters and other tools.
A 35-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with two counts of break and enter, theft of motor vehicle, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and driving while suspended after two break-ins in the same neighbourhood in the area of Woolwich and Division.
A 40-year-old Toronto man, his 15-year-old son and a 25-year-old Etobicoke man are all charged with break and enter Friday night after it was reported to police that three men stealing metal products from a business near Dawson and Woodlawn. A witness blocked their vehicle with a transport truck.
Drugs

Fraud
Reports of another cryptocurrency scam were released after a victim told police he met a man in the summer through an online chat and believed the two knew each other from childhood overseas. Between September and the end of November the victim transferred $188,000 USD through a series of transactions for the purposes of buying cryptocurrency. He called police after he was asked to pay an additional 30 per cent “verification fee”. Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.

Impaired Driving
A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited last Saturday night after police found a man passed out in a car parked outside a business at Edinburgh and Kortright, the vehicle was running, the transmission was in drive, and firefighters had to break the car’s window to gain access to the drive.
A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, driving while suspended and novice driver having alcohol in their system Sunday morning after a collision at Laird and Southgate. A vehicle had struck a light standard, knocking it down and partially blocking the road. The driver of the vehicle had twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
Theft
Just after 7 pm last Saturday, a man and woman entered a business near Stone and Scottsdale and stole 136 Maybelline lipsticks with a value of $2,242 in less than five minutes. The man was described as mid-30s, 5’8” with a medium build, olive complexion and dark facial hair wearing a black workwear-style jacket, beige sweater, jeans and a black baseball ca; the woman was also mid-30s, 5’6” with a medium build, olive complexion, dark hair and a large nose, wearing a long beige winter jacket, black sweater and a zebra-print toque. On Monday police were called to a home near Woolwich and Speedvale after the homeowner reported that his locked shed had been entered and two Envo D35 e-bikes worth $2,000 were stolen. Both bikes are teal and white with black nylon luggage bags on the rear and mirrors on the left handlebars. Between $18,000 to $20,000 worth of cigarettes and a small amount of cash were stolen from a business at Eramosa and Metcalfe at 1 am on Sunday morning. Security video revealed three men arrived in a white car and parked in front of the business. One of the men smashed the glass door and all three entered. All three men were dressed in dark clothing with ski masks and gloves. Two are believed to have brown skin and the third had white or lighter brown skin. On their way to the scene, police passed a white car later determined to be stolen from Peel Region, but it is not known if it was involved in this incident. A 28-year-old Guelph man is facing a long list of charges including two counts of possessing stolen property, eight counts of possessing an identity document, two counts of possession for the purpose of distributing under the Cannabis Act and nine counts of driving while prohibited. The BEAT unit arrested the man after spotting a stolen Acura in a parking lot on Fife Road Thursday afternoon. A search revealed a BB rifle and ammunition, more than 80 small packages of cannabis and hashish and eight identity documents and two credit cards in various names.
A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with nine counts of theft under $5,000 for six gas-and-go thefts and three shoplifting incidents in November.
Traffic
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, an officer was patrolling on Woolwich when the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader (ALPR) flagged a vehicle associated to a suspended driver. The officer attempted to pull over the black GMC Sierra pick-up as it entered the East Parkade downtown, but the driver intentionally reversed into the cruiser and fled the area. The driver was described as a light-skinned black male wearing a brown coat and blue medical mask. At approximately 10 pm on Wednesday, police received a call from the owner of a Wyndham Street North business about a stolen grey Trek Allant+ 7 e-bike valued at $4,500. Security video showed a man wearing a long grey coat with the hood up, green or black pants, a black backpack and gloves gaining access by breaking a window on a back door. Emergency services were called at 1:37 pm to the intersection of Wyndham and Carden where a 49-year-old Fergus man was struck as he crossed Wyndham Street. The man was extricated from under the bus by Guelph Fire but pronounced dead a short time later. Other Notes
Guelph Police are promoting Project Lifesaver, a battery-operated bracelet which emits a unique FM radio signal 24 hours a day, after a 94-year-old man was reported missing from an address near Victoria and Cassino on Friday. The man suffers from a cognitive impairment, and thanks to the bracelet he was found within 34 minutes of police being called. Project Lifesaver is administered by Victim Services Wellington who visit each client every 60 days to change the battery on their bracelet. There is a modest start-up fee and monthly maintenance cost, but missing people registered with Project Lifesaver are located within an average of 30 minutes and has a 100 per cent find rate. A 41-year-old Guelph woman was charged with failing to attend court and failing to comply with an undertaking after missing a December court date for robbery and assault. She was also found with a man she was bound on release conditions to not associate with.
A 26-year-old Guelph man is charged with mischief under $5,000 and three counts of uttering threats after police were called to a north end housing for a physical disturbance. A fire extinguisher was damaged, and a week earlier three employees had to lock themselves in an office while a resident pounded on the door, demanding cigarettes and threatening to harm the workers.
