POLICE NOTES: RIDE Results, Steel Stolen and Hitch Snatched!

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just after 4 am on Sunday, a police officer was approached by an injured man near Gordon and Waterloo. He had two slashes across his abdomen as well as a cut on his eyebrow and bruising on his face after getting into a fight with two unknown men at a downtown business. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. An 18-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon on Tuesday after police were called to a jewelry store on Stone Road where a man wearing a disguise was taking pictures of the store. When police caught up to the man he was concealing a machete.


A 19-year-old Barrie man was charged with assault with a weapon after a 19-year-old victim was sitting at a table with friends inside a club when she was struck in the head by a bottle thrown by a man on the dance floor. The two were not known to each other. The victim was treated on scene for a cut to her head.

Break-Ins

On Tuesday at 5:15 am police were called to a business on Gordon Street, south of Clair for the report of a break and enter. Suspects smashed a window to took various items including a cash box. On Tuesday, someone broke into a home being renovated on York Road. Multiple items were taken from the home, including industrial heaters. If you have any information call Sgt. C. Probst at 519-824-1212 ext. 7342 or email him at cprobst [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 23-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, using a stolen credit card, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and three counts of breaching a probation order for a break-in at a Huron Street home last Thursday night. When the suspect was seen on video wearing a stolen jacket making purchases with stolen cards, the Break Enter Auto Theft unit executed a search warrant on Friday at a home just outside the downtown and recovered the stolen phones taken from the break-in.

Drugs

A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested on Tuesday and charged with theft of motor vehicle, operation while prohibited and breaching a probation order, plus two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. The suspect allegedly had fentanyl and crystal meth on him when arrested. The car had been stolen from downtown Guelph on Monday.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

The Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program has ended for another year, and two impaired driving charges were laid after 1,726 vehicles were checked at various locations around Guelph between the launch in mid-November and New Year’s Eve. Along with the two impaired driving charges there were six motorists who had their licences suspended for three days after registering a ‘warning’ on the roadside device, which indicates a blood alcohol concentration of between 50 and 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. For comparison, during the 2023-24 Festive RIDE program, officers checked 100 fewer vehicles but also laid two impaired driving charges and issued six three-day suspensions.

Theft

Police have released a photo of two men who hung around in Stone Road Mall after it closed on December 10 and then broke into a stand-alone business stealing $17,810 in phones and smart watches. Just after 4 pm on Thursday, staff reported two men and a woman left the store with more than 30 bottles of scotch and tequila. The first suspect was described as a white male wearing a blue and black coat, hoodie and Blue Jays baseball cap. The second was described as a possibly white male wearing a grey coat with black fur trim on the hood and dark pants. The third was a white female with blonde hair wearing a red coat with black fur trim on the hood and dark pants. On Monday, the owner of a business near Elmira and Malcolm reported that a customer’s trailer had been stolen over the Christmas break. The trailer was secured with a lock on the hitch, but it was broken off. It is described as a black 2021 14-foot Miska dual-axle dump trailer valued at approximately $8,000. On December 16 police were called to a business near Elmira and Massey, after a large quantity of steel tubes were removed from their yard. The stolen tubes ranged from three to 12 feet in length. Surveillance video from a nearby business showed two men arriving in a white cube van at approximately 2 am on December 15. They spent nearly two hours on scene and left in the van just before 4 am. Both men appeared to be white and were wearing jackets, dark-coloured jeans, white shoes, gloves and face coverings. On Friday, police attended a construction site near Starwood and Watson after a supervisor reported that a man gained access to a building under construction either late Christmas Day or early Boxing Day. Approximately $15,000 worth of tools and supplies were stolen. The suspect is described as wearing a dark-coloured hoodie with the hood up and pulling a dark-coloured wagon. The investigation is ongoing, but if you have any information call Constable Andrew Kamenz at 519-824-1212, ext. 7566, or email akamenz [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 19-year-old Waterloo man, who was 17 at the time of these incidents he was arrested for, was charged with robbery, attempted robbery, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and several weapons offences. The incidents in question were on June 19, 2023 and involved an attempted robbery at a Silvercreek North business before a ride in a stolen vehicle down to Brantford where a large quantity of prescription medication was stolen with weapons brandished. The investigation is ongoing.


On Wednesday, a 41-year-old Guelph female was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 for an August 15 incident where $226 in items were stolen from a south end grocery store.


On Tuesday, police located a 42-year-old Guelph man and charged him with robbery, break and enter, failing to comply with a release order and failing to comply with an undertaking for a November incident where a victim was robbery in the west end after receiving a head injury.


A 23-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a bail order Sunday after a loss prevention officer at a Silvercreek North observed a man putting items in his backpack, and he threatened to kill the employee when confronted. When he was arrested, police found he was in possession of a pocketknife, which is a violation of a bail condition imposed earlier this month after an alleged assault and threatening employees at two different businesses.

Traffic

Guelph Police are looking for witnesses after a hit and run collision Monday morning at 6:30 am. A driver was attempting to turn onto Woodlawn Road from Arrow when his vehicle was struck, pushing it into a third vehicle. No injuries were reported. A red sedan with significant front-end damage fled the scene westbound on Woodlawn. Other Notes

A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with making a false alarm of fire, possessing a controlled substance and breaching a probation order after pulling a fire alarm at city hall last Friday morning following a verbal altercation with staff. He also allegedly had some suspected meth on his person.
