POLICE NOTES: A Quiet-ish Christmas Week

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just before 2 pm on Sunday, police were dispatched to a business near Woodlawn Road and Woolwich Street to respond to a disturbance. The manager had spotted a woman who was previously banned from the store and saw her concealing merchandise. He tried to escort her out when another man approached and shoved the manager. Both suspects then spat in the victim’s face before fleeing. The suspects were described as a white male with a bald head, wearing shorts and a t-shirt and a white female wearing a light blue jacket. A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested for theft under $5,000 and assault last Saturday after he left a business near Speedvale and Stevenson without paying for merchandise. An employee and a customer confronted the man outside, and the customer began recording the suspect on their phone until it was slapped out of the customer’s hand. The same suspect was also wanted for two incidents the week before during which employees of stores downtown and on Stone Road West were threatened and assaulted, so he was further charged with an additional three counts of assault and five counts of uttering threats.

Break-Ins

On Thursday, police received a call from a resident of Huron Street who reported that two phones, car keys, a jacket and two debit cards had been stolen from his home sometime overnight while the people inside the home slept. The two debit cards were later used to make several purchases downtown. A suspect was caught on video wearing the stolen jacket while using the cards. A 51-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter and breaching a probation order on Monday evening after a homeowner and her 13-year-old son called about a man yelling in the area of Waterloo and Hearn entering their home. They were on the second floor and locked themselves in a bedroom as the man walked around their house, yelling.

Drugs

Nothing to report.

Fraud

On November 21, a male in his 80s reported that he had received a call that was supposedly from his bank, and was “advised” that his debit card had been compromised. The caller said a courier would attend the victim’s residence to collect the debit card and provided his PIN number, and the card was then was used to make approximately $4,000 in purchases. Police believe the man in the photo to the right has information relevant to the investigation. Impaired Driving

A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving last Saturday evening after running a RIDE check on Gordon just south of Wellington Street. He also refused to provide a breath sample.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving early Sunday morning after a police patrol near Woodlawn and Woolwich observed a vehicle being driven erratically and pulled it over. The officer detected a strong odour of alcohol and the driver was showing signs of impairment.

Theft

Just after 7 am on Monday, a resident near Carrington and Harts reported her silver 2020 Jetta had been stolen overnight; personal property including cash, a jacket and perfume were inside the vehicle. At approximately 1:45 pm last Friday, police were called to a business under renovation near York and Kingsmill, which was entered overnight and $800 worth tools including drills and a propane heater were stolen. The front door had been pried open causing a glass pane above the door to crack. A 39-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for robbery, theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property and failing to comply with an undertaking on Christmas Eve after stealing items from a Speedvale and Stevenson store and punching an employee in the face. Then on Boxing Day, she was arrested for another count of robbery after she was caught stealing  from a store on Silvercreek Parkway North.

Other Notes

A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing a controlled substance and four counts of breaching a probation order on Christmas morning after concerned residents reported a man with a bow and arrow in a vacant lot on Surrey Street East. The man said that he was using his homemade bow and arrows for target shooting, but he was under two separate probation orders including conditions not to possess weapons. He also had some crystal meth on him.
