POLICE NOTES: Cut Cords, Bar Fight and Stolen Truck Burned

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with attempted murder, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon after he got into an altercation with another man at a downtown bar after midnight on Sunday. The victim was taken to a Hamilton trauma centre for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.


A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, three counts of assault, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breaching a probation order after three employees of Guelph General Hospital and another patient were assaulted while he was seeking medical attention.


A 62-year-old Guelph man was located and arrested for assault on Saturday afternoon after a man was confronted outside a store at Eramosa and Stevenson and punched in the face. The victim had been shopping when he accidentally bumped into the suspect who was not known to him.

Break-Ins

Just after 8 am last Saturday, police were called to a business near Speedvale and Dawson after staff arrived to find a front window smashed. Surveillance video showed three males arriving in a van just before 6 am and stealing a large quantity of Milwaukee-brand power tools. The first male was wearing a brown or beige jacket, black pants, a black hat and gloves. The second wore a blue puffy jacket, jeans, white shoes, gloves and a hat. The third wore all black clothing and gloves. They were driving a white 2016 Chevrolet Express van which had previously been reported stolen. A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested for break and enter and breaching a probation order last Friday for a July break and enter at a business near Speedvale and Stevenson stealing $3,000. A 48-year-old Guelph woman was previously arrested for this crime in October.

Drugs

Two Guelph men, aged 51 and 41, as well as a 40-year-old Halton man were arrested and charged for possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing prohibited weapons and breaching court orders after an investigation by the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit. Search warrants were executed at three addresses in September recovering quantities of suspected crystal methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl with an estimated total value of more than $14,000. Real and replica firearms were also seized, as were more than stolen 40 bicycles, a crossbow, a homemade conducted energy weapon, three motorcycles, tools and a riding lawnmower.

On Wednesday, a 34-year-old Erin woman was arrested by Halton Regional Police and was charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and unauthorized possession of a weapon. She was returned to Guelph and held for a bail hearing Thursday.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 32-year-old man is charged with impaired operation on Thursday morning after a pickup was found on the curb crashed against some scaffolding near Arthur and Cross. The driver was in the back seat and appeared confused and disoriented. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.


An 18-year-old Eden Mills man was arrested for impaired operation after emergency services were called to a business at Gordon and Harvard after he was found slumped over in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle behind the business. The man was roused by paramedics but continued to be drowsy. Drug paraphernalia was observed inside the vehicle.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and speeding last Saturday afternoon after a patrol near Clair and Beaver Meadow clock an Audi doing 81 kilometre per hour in a 50 zone.

Theft

On Wednesday, the owner of a business on Massey Road reported a grey 2012 GMC Sierra and silver double-axle trailer had been stolen from the property the night before. Surveillance video showed suspects arriving in a black minivan approximately 7:40 pm. The good news is that the truck was located in Hagersville at 1:30 am on Wednesday, but the bad news is that it was completely destroyed by fire. Other Notes

On Friday morning it was reported that residents and businesses in the area of Quebec and Baker had their telephone and internet cables cut. This is not dissimilar from an incident on Wednesday morning when at least 13 businesses on Wyndham North reported their external cables damaged, affecting their ability to conduct business. That damage occurred at approximately 5:30 am. A 35-year-old Hamilton man was charged with disobeying a court order and three counts of breaching a probation order on Wednesday after he spotted downtown bothering a woman he was not supposed to be within 100 metres of.


A 47-year-old Guelph man was arrested for breaching a conditional sentence order on Tuesday after his GPS monitoring device detected that he was not at home. In October he was placed on house arrest and could only leave on Saturday between 1 and 4 pm to run errands. He was not given an extension by his probation officer like he told the police.


Last Friday afternoon police received calls from several residents about a man and women waving a gun around near Waterloo and Woodycrest. The firearm, which was determined to be a replica, was surrendered to police. No charges were laid.
