POLICE NOTES: Butter Boosted, Another Cyclist Collision and Needle Attack

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just before 5 pm on Thursday, a woman at Guelph Central Station began yelling at a man and his girlfriend and tried to poke them with a needle. No physical injuries were reported. The suspect was described as white, mid-30s and short with a small build. She was wearing a pink sweater around her shoulders, a white sweater around her waist, grey trackpants and a beany-style hat. A woman in her 60s stopped into a restaurant near Willow and Dawson at approximately 5:30 pm last Saturday evening when a man not known to her approached from behind and touched her inappropriately. She described him as black with a dark complexion, 6’2” to 6’3” with a medium build and curly hair. He was wearing dark-coloured pants and shirt. On Wednesday a 35-year-old Kitchener woman was arrested for assault causing bodily harm and theft under $5,000 for a theft and assault on September 22 at a Stone Road business. Her 15-year-old son was previous arrested for this crime.


A 65-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Tuesday morning after one man brandished a steak knife and metal pipe and told a witness that he wanted to harm another man he had an argument with.


A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000 and breaching probation Tuesday after a client at a downtown social service agency reportedly tried to strike another client with a bat, and then intentionally struck and broke the victim’s laptop.


A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault and forcible confinement after a woman called police to a Speedvale East business. She had been punched in the face by a male relative and then locked out on her second-floor balcony. She jumped from the balcony and went to the store for help.

Break-Ins

Just after 7:30 am on Wednesday police were called to a business near Woolwich and Norfolk where security video showed a man attending the business just before 3 am, walking around the exterior before throwing a rock through a window to gain entry. He left again a few minutes later and it is not known if anything was stolen. He was described as wearing all dark clothing with a hood over his face. On Wednesday police were called to a business near Imperial and Curtis after $2,500 worth of steel tubing was found missing. Surveillance video showed two men at the business just after midnight on October 17, prying up a fence, entering the yard and passing the tubing under the fence. Both men were wearing dark hoodies, dark pants and grey shoes, and one had a hat with a logo on the front. On Sunday at 5:45 pm police received an alarm at a business near Massey and Elmira, one business there was entered entered by smashing a rear window, and an attempt was made at a neighbouring unit. It is believed the true target was copper wire and other supplies from a neighbouring business, where unsuccessful attempts had been made to pry open a metal door. Drugs

A 28-year-old Guelph woman was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a controlled substance and unauthorized possession of a weapon after a suspicious vehicle call Thursday morning near Victoria and Brant. A vehicle had been idling there for two hours and a woman was found in the driver’s seat sleeping. A search revealed approximately $1,400 worth of crack cocaine, some Oxycodone tablets, a digital scale, drug packaging and a folding knife with attached brass knuckles.

Impaired Driving

A 40-year-old Guelph-Eramosa man was charged with impaired driving and his licence was suspended for 90 days after witnesses reported a black Jeep being driven erratically and the driver appeared to be falling asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle was found in the middle of Waterworks Place with the driver lying on the road apparently inspect the undercarriage. He had nearly three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at a collision last Saturday morning. Just after midnight, a witness saw one vehicle strike another on Bagot Street and then leave the scene. The driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

Just after 8 am on Thursday a BMW SUV was stolen from the lot of a downtown business while waiting to have work done. Four hours later, the manager of an apartment building at Gordon and Lowes reported that someone had parked a similar SUV erratically and ran into the building. Investigation confirmed it was the same vehicle. The suspect was described as a white female, mid-30s with a thin build. She was wearing a white, red and black leather jacket. At approximately 7:45 pm on October 12, two males separately entered a business on Speedvale Avenue East, placed a number of items in a cart – including three cases of butter with a value of $936 – and left out a receiving door. They were both described as brown-skinned males, approximately 40 years of age and 5’7” with medium builds. One was wearing a dark sleeveless vest and a blue and white baseball cap, and the second was wearing a dark winter coat and red baseball cap. They were seen leaving the scene in a white four-door sedan.

Four days later, the near exact crime happened on Eramosa Road with four cases of butter taken with a value of $958. The suspects there were both described as having brown skin. One wore a tan jacket, black pants and a black winter hat. The other wore a black jacket, black pants and a black baseball cap. They left through an emergency exit. There have been at least seven large-scale butter thefts in Guelph in the last 10 months, but it’s not known if all the incidents are related. Traffic

A Guelph man was transported to hospital with minor injuries after he was struck by a car just before 6 am Friday morning near Starwood and Skinner. A 30-year-old Guelph man was struck and sustained a facial injury. The investigation is ongoing.


A 62-year-old Guelph woman is charged with speeding and stunt driving Wednesday afternoon driving more than two and a half times the speed limit near Woolwich and Marilyn. The car was doing 103 kilometres per hour in a 40 zone.


A 76-year-old Guelph man was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre with lower-body injuries after an elderly cyclist had a collision with a pickup truck Tuesday morning near Woolwich and London. The investigation is ongoing.

Other Notes

An Edmonton man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was arrested in Guelph last Wednesday. Members of the OPP’s Repeat Offender and Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Unit in collaboration with the Guelph Police located and arrested the 54-year-old, who was wanted in Alberta for sexual offences against a child after a Guelph Police patrol was alerted to a vehicle belonging to the wanted man outside a south-end workplace by the automated plate reader. The man has been held in custody awaiting extradition back to Alberta.


A 73-year-old Guelph man is charged with committing an indecent act after employees at a Woodlawn West business went out to the garbage last Saturday afternoon and found a man lying on the grass behind the store and masturbating.
