POLICE NOTES: Missing Person, Forklift Joyride, and Drunk Driving Disaster

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Missing Person

Assault

A 28-year-old Brampton man, who is not a University of Guelph student, was charged with sexual assault Wednesday night after police were called the university library when a woman there reported that she was followed into the building and sexually assaulted by a male unknown to her. The victim was not physically injured.


A 15-year-old girl was charged with assault and two counts of failing to comply with a release order after assaulting one girl near Scottsdale and Wilsonview while one her friends recorded the assault. Officers later located the suspect at home in Guelph-Eramosa Township and the investigation revealed that she is on two release orders with conditions not to associate with one of the girls who recorded the incident.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent to wound, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of failing to comply with a release order. On Monday morning, the victim reported that he had been in an altercation with another man at a west end encampment, when the suspect pulled a black handgun from his waistband and shot it at the victim. A 31-year-old Guelph woman was also charged with failing to comply with a release order since she and the suspect are both bound by conditions not to contact each other.

Break-Ins

At approximately 3 pm on Sunday, police were called to a business near Laird and Hanlon Creek Boulevard, where they found a rear door had been pried open. It appeared that a forklift had been started and driven around inside the business, but no theft was reported and no damage reported except the exterior door. A 23-year-old Guelph man was located and arrested for break and enter on Tuesday for a break-in at a business near Baker and Chapel on October 8.

Drugs

Nothing to report.

Fraud

On Monday, a 33-year-old Kitchener woman was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000 after diverting $95,000 from the social committee at a Guelph employer over a 16-month period ending in August 2023. More than 50 e-transfers were sent from the social committee bank account to the treasurer’s personal email. Obviously, she is no longer employed by the company.

Impaired Driving

A 58-year-old man from the Sarnia area was charged with impaired driving, having cannabis readily available in a vehicle and several Highway Traffic Act offences on Thursday afternoon after a commercial motor vehicle inspection near Woodlawn and Elmira. Not only was there a haze in the cab, and not only did he appear confused and unable to find his documentation, and not only was there a partially-smoked joint in the cupholder, but he had a pouch of synthetic urine in his pant to pass spot drug tests.


A 24-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and driving without a licence on Wednesday night near Woodlawn and Inverness after police were called to the scene of a collision. Officers arrived to find a wooden hydro pole sheared off and live wires draped across a demolished car. The driver was taken to the hospital with an electrical burn on her arm, and when tested she had nearly twice the legal amount of alcohol in her system. Woodlawn Road was closed in both directions through the night as hydro crews worked to replace the pole and restore power. Damage is estimated in the tens of thousands.


A 47-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and her licence was suspended for 90 days after police received reports of a vehicle being driven erratically in the area of Victoria and Maltby Tuesday afternoon. Breath tests at the police station revealed she had nearly three times the legal amount of alcohol in her system.


Last Saturday night, a 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving, and his licence was suspended for 90 days after police were called to the area of Arthur and Eramosa after reports of a collision on Saturday night. Investigation revealed a driver lost control and struck a parked vehicle, causing extensive damage. The driver had three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

A 39-year-old Woodstock man is charged with theft under $5,000, assault and assault to resist arrest after police were called to Woodlawn West on Wednesday afternoon. A man had attempted to leave the business with power tools valued at approximately $700 and then punched an employee twice in the face when he tried to stop him.

Traffic

At approximately 1:40 am on Friday, a resident on Essex near Dublin called to report her vehicle had just been hit and the subject vehicle took off leaving significant damage. Security video from a nearby home showed the culprit was a black or dark-coloured SUV, which then took off with front-end damage. Other Notes

The Guelph Fire Department and Guelph Police are investigating a fatal house fire last weekend. Emergency services were called to Mayfield Avenue at 2:42 pm last Saturday and found the house fully engulfed and were unable to make entry. A male in his 90s was located deceased inside the residence after the fire was put out. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation.
