POLICE NOTES: Homecoming, Trail Assault and E-Bike Collision

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Homecoming 

Bylaw officials responded to more than 40 noise complaints across the city between noon on Saturday and 4 am Sunday last weekend for Homecoming, plus there were several Liquor Licence Act charges laid and several people were transported to hospital due to intoxication. There were even some fireworks set off around 11:30 pm on Saturday though no injuries were reported. So for the most part, it was a pretty standard Homecoming.

But… there was one major incident. Just after 9 pm on Saturday night, a man approached an officer in the area of Edinburgh and Chancellors to report that he had been stabbed in the abdomen during an altercation with unknown parties. He was transported to hospital for treatment of his injury. As for suspects, there were possibly one white male and one light-skinned black male wearing black clothing and medical masks. A 16-year-old Cambridge teen was charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon, failing to comply with an undertaking and two Liquor Licence Act offences last Saturday night after an officer on patrol observed a male carrying an open can of beer on Ediburgh near Chancellors. During a search, a folding knife was located in his pants pocket, and he was on an undertaking which includes a weapons prohibition.

Assault

Police are investigating after a young woman reported being sexually assaulted by a stranger Tuesday at approximately 1 pm on a trail within the Pine Ridge subdivision. The woman noticed a male approaching from behind her on a bike, and when she stepped to the side to give him room, the man touched her inappropriately. The victim was not physically injured. The suspect is described as white with dirty blonde shoulder-length hair. He was wearing a black backpack and riding a black bicycle. A 15-year-old girl was arrested and charged with assault cause bodily harm after police were called to a high school on Wednesday. Two girls became involved in an altercation when one of them assaulted the other causing serious injuries, including a concussion.


A 31-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm, failing to comply with a court order, breaching probation and failing to attend court on Monday morning. The man was threatening police officers as they were tying to arrest him on these other charges.


A 64-year-old Guelph man was located at his residence and arrested for assault with a weapon and dangerous driving after a dispute over prices at a cigar shop in the south end lead to yelling and swearing before he threw several items at the clerk.


An 18-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm and two counts of breaching release conditions. Last Saturday evening, police were called after a couple had argued with an unknown woman about smoking at the bus terminal, before ll three got on a bus to the Willow West Mall area where the argument continued until the suspect removed a BB gun from her bag and shot the male once in the chest. The victim was treated for minor injuries.

Break-Ins

At approximately 11:30 pm last Saturday, police were called by a resident near Starwood and Starview who had arrived home after a few days away to discover the house had been entered. A laptop and three PlayStation units with a total value of approximately $4,000 were stolen. It also appeared the suspect went through drawers in the master bedroom but it’s not known if anything was stolen. On Tuesday morning police were called to a business on Southgate Drive where staff had arrived to work and noticed a gate had been cut open. Someone had tampered with a rotating security camera in the yard at approximately 7:40 pm on Sunday, and cut a hole in the fence to provide access for a vehicle. Nearly 500 metres of copper wire with a value of close to $16,000 was stolen and more than $21,000 in damage was done to several transformers. A 44-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property and obstructing police after police were called to an apartment unit near Brant and Victoria Monday night. The complainant saw someone entering the unit of a friend who is in the process of moving, and when police arrived she gave them a fake name.

Drugs

Two Guelph men, aged 51 and 41, as well as a 40-year-old Halton man and a 34-year-old Erin woman face charges including possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing prohibited weapons and breaching court orders after the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit executed search warrants at homes in east Guelph, Erin and the Campbellville area with assistance from the OPP and Halton Regional Police.

In all, officers recovered quantities of suspected crystal meth, cocaine and fentanyl with an estimated total value of more than $14,000. Officers also recovered several real and replica firearms, a stolen crossbow, a homemade conducted energy weapon and suspected stolen property including more than 40 bicycles, three motorcycles, tools and a riding lawnmower.


A 40-year-old Guelph man was arrested on Thursday night of a gas theft the week before. During a traffic stop police found clear indication of drug use in the vehicle and was additionally charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance including suspected meth and hydromorphone pills.

Fraud

A 66-year-old Guelph man and a 44-year-old Kitchener woman were both arrested and charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 for financial misconduct that occurred between the years 2016 and 2018 and incurring a loss of close to $100,000 for a Guelph organization.

Impaired Driving

A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with refuse to comply with demand under the Criminal Code on Thurssday after police responded to a driving complaint on College Avenue.


An 81-year-old Kitchener woman was charged with operation while impaired and operation 80 and above on Thursday after a vehicle was seen making a turn from Victoria on to the oncoming traffic on Eramosa and then mounting a curb to avoid a collision.


A 69-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving following a driving complaint Friday afternoon after a witness reported a vehicle being driven erratically. When the driver left his vehicle to enter a business he was only wearing one shoe.

Theft

Nothing to report.

Traffic

Just before 1 pm on Tuesday, a Guelph woman was riding an e-bike on Gordon at Surrey when she was struck by a van. The driver of the van didn’t stop. The cyclist sustained minor injuries. The subject vehicle was described as an older gold or tan minivan which appeared to have previous significant damage to the rear tailgate and bumper. A 35-year-old Guelph man who was charged striking Susan Bard in a vehicular collision on September 6 has had his charges upgraded to failing to remain at a collision causing death and operating an unsafe vehicle.


A 60-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving and his licence was suspended for 30 days after a ride share was caught driving 91 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone along Victoria Road North near St James Catholic High School .


A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop at a collision and breaching an undertaking last Saturday morning after the driver walked away from a crash on Bagot Street where a car hit a parked vehicle and flipped onto its roof. A woman at the scene tried to say she was behind the wheel, and she was charged with obstructing police. The driver had an undertaking with a condition not to occupy the driver’s seat of any vehicle.
