POLICE NOTES: $20,000 in Drugs Seized, Thief Fakes Pregnancy and Sex Tape Bust

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 31-year-old Guelph woman faces new charges of carrying a concealed weapon, mischief under $5,000, uttering death threats, failing to attend court and two additional counts of breaching probation. She was also wanted for four outstanding warrants, which police discovered after responding to a report of an unwanted person Thursday morning in the east end. The victim reported she had earlier received threatening messages through social media and was concerned for her safety.


A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and mischief over $5,000 after police were called to a plaza near Suffolk and Yorkshire on Sunday. The suspect threatened a man with a knife before following him to a store and then he got on the victims motorcycle and crashed it into the side of the store.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching a probation order last Friday after a woman was threatened with a folding knife by a man panhandling in the area of Willow and Silvercreek.


Two Guelph men, aged 20 and 18, are charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose early last Saturday morning when a man on the University of Guelph campus said one of the suspects pulled a handgun out of his bag and pointed it at him. Campus police were called and during a search they found a replica firearm in the waistband of one of the men. The older suspect is also charged with uttering threats and pointing a firearm.

Break-Ins

At approximately 12:25 am on Monday police were called to an address on Northumberland near Yorkshire where a doorbell camera had alerted the homeowners to movement outside A man was observed on the driveway close to a shed before he fled on foot. The power tools were dumped nearby. The suspect was described as a white male with a slim build and wearing a black sweater, camouflage pants, a white baseball cap and flip flops. Also on Monday, at approximately 1:20 pm, police were called to a home on Melrose Place (not that one) after the homeowner discovered his backyard shed open. His son’s GT Aggressor mountain bike was missing along with several power gardening tools. It is believed the break-in happened Sunday as a neighbour’s surveillance cameras recorded two men walking with a bicycle and various other items. A 43-year-old Guelph woman is wanted for break and enter at a Exhibition Park area home on Thursday. Surveillance video showed a woman attempting to open the back door just after 8 am before gaining access through the front door. While inside, the suspect ate some food, fed the complainant’s dogs, turned off the air conditioning and changed her clothes. Before leaving she stole property including cigarettes, gift cards and clothing. Police recognised her from video.


A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter after police found someone inside a concession stand at Exhibition Arena early Thursday morning. Three Guelph Royals baseball jerseys were recovered. Investigation revealed the concession shutters and two cash boxes had been pried open, causing approximately $1,000 in damage.

Drugs

A 42-year-old Guelph woman and two Guelph men, aged 40 and 32, each face charges of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and possessing proceeds of crime. An investigation that began this summer culminated on Wednesday morning with three search warrants that were executed simultaneously at addresses on Willow Road and Waterloo Avenue. As a result of the searches officers recovered:

  • Approximately 107 grams of fentanyl with an estimated value of $10,700
  • Approximately 30 grams of carfentanyl with an estimated value of $6,000
  • Approximately 484 grams of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated value of $5,000
  • 70 Hydromorpohone pills with an estimated value of $700
  • Almost $7,500 in cash
  • Two replica firearms

Fraud

There were at least two reports this week of residents receiving threatening emails. In both cases, the victims received emails demanding payment via Bitcoin, with the scammers claiming they had accessed the victim’s webcams and had recorded incriminating videos. Both victims also received Google Streetview images of their street, though both appeared to be old images. There is no known connection between the two victims, and it is not known if their information was stolen during a data breach or if the scammers used open sources to obtain their information. Residents are reminded to be careful what you post online.

Impaired Driving

A 30-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and possessing a controlled substance, and her licence was suspended for 90 days after police received 9-1-1 calls about a Lexus being driven erratically on Exhibition Street Wednesday afternoon. The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, and during a search a small amount of suspected crystal meth was located on her person.


A 40-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired operation, and her licence was suspended for 90 days after police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West Tuesday morning. She had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.


A 61-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, and his licence was suspended for 90 days after a collision on Rickson Avenue Monday afternoon. One driver said he saw another vehicle driving towards him so he stopped, but the other driver kept coming and collided with his car. No injuries were reported.


A 27-year-old Kitchener man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving last Friday evening after another motorist was stopped at a red light just west of Guelph when his vehicle was struck by a driver attempting to pass on the shoulder. The victim followed the other vehicle and motioned the driver to pull over and exchange information, however he fled at a high rate of speed towards Guelph. He then ran a red light and hit another vehicle at a high rate of speed near Speedvale and Elmira. He had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Theft

At approximately 10:15 am on Wednesday, a Waterloo man called police to report his grey 2022 Hyundai Tucson had been stolen from outside his workplace near Eramosa and Metcalfe. Then, on Thursday morning, an officer patrolling the area of Bristol located a Pontiac Vibe which had been reported stolen Tuesday from that same area. Just before 3 pm on Tuesday, a Guelph woman called police to report her grey 2005 Pontiac Vibe missing. She had parked the car on Birmingham at around 8 am to catch a train to Toronto and when she returned the car was gone. The lower passenger-side door is a different grey than the rest of the car. On August 12, a loss prevention officer working at Sephora in Stone Road Mall discovered large empty spaces which a day earlier had been filled with product. A review of security video showed a woman entering the store the previous day and stealing a significant number of cosmetics and fragrances valued at more than $2,200. The suspect was described as a white female in her late 20s with brown hair. She was wearing a large grey skirt with straps over the shoulders, black t-shirt, beige sun hat, black purse and carrying a striped bag. It’s believed that she may have been wearing a fake pregnant belly into which the stolen products were placed. A 17-year-old Guelph boy was charged with robbery, possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and several counts of failing to comply with a release order Sunday afternoon after staff at a Stone Road Mall store caught the suspect stealing three knives. A search incident to arrest revealed the stolen knives, along with a fourth knife and a replica firearm. Officers also discovered a quantity of suspected methamphetamine, a small digital scale and unused plastic baggies.

Other Notes

On Wednesday morning a 28-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were arrested for committing an indecent act after recording themselves have sex in a crowded public area near Wyndham and Quebec earlier this month. On Tuesday, a short video of the act was posted on Twitter (or X if you like) before being removed a short time later.


A 69-year-old Guelph man was arrested for voyeurism last Saturday after four female students reported finding hidden cameras in the bathrooms of their rental house. The device resembled a charger, but when held at an angle a small camera lens could be observed inside and a micro-SD card was found in the back.
