Fraud

In late June, a victim saw a social media ad which depicted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaking at a press conference. The audio was muted, but a banner at the bottom of the ad claimed the government was removing taxes on investments and urged people to take advantage. The victim clicked on a link, believing it to be legitimate. Between early July and mid-August he sent 10 e-transfers from his bank account to an email address allegedly connected to his crypto account, but when he attempted to withdraw funds from his account, he was told that he needed to pay capital gains tax. He became suspicious and that’s when he called police. This Guelph man lost $28,500 to cryptocurrency fraud. Residents are strongly urged to be cautious when interacting with unknown parties online.
