POLICE NOTES: Homicide Arrest, Ride Share Assault, and Rogers Vandalism

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Homicide

A 50-year-old Guelph man was charged with second-degree murder after he came to police headquarters last Saturday morning suffering from injuries. Based on information provided, officers attended an apartment unit near Waterloo and Edinburgh where they found a female deceased. The suspect and the victim were known to each other, and the investigation is ongoing. Assault

On Wednesday a 41-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a release order for a July 24 incident near Woolwich and Eramosa. During an altercation a 35-year-old man was stabbed in the leg and that person was arrested Monday and charged with robbery and assault. Two Guelph women, aged 38 and 40, also face the same charges. The investigation is ongoing.


A 56-year-old Guelph man was arrested for sexual assault Monday after acting as a ride share earlier that day where he picked up a woman in her 20s downtown. The driver asked her to sit in the front seat so she could control the music and as he drove, the male grabbed the woman’s face and kissed her on the mouth several times without her consent.

Break-Ins

Police were called to an address near Scottsdale and Cole on Tuesday night after a resident came home from work and found her front door unlocked. Someone had rummaged through her bedroom and took a quantity of jewelry was missing. Alcohol was reported missing from a shared fridge. On Wednesday a 56-year-old Guelph woman turned herself in and was arrested for break and enter, assault with a weapon, disguise with intent, two counts of forcible confinement and two counts of uttering death threats for a July 24 home invasion at a Woolwich Street apartment. Two other suspects remain outstanding and the investigation is continuing.

Drugs

Nothing to report.

Fraud

On Sunday, a 61-year-old Guelph man was arrested for fraud over $5,000 after an investigation after months long investigation after $9,000 was withdrawn from a client’s bank account the day after she passed away. The account had been established by a local social services agency for this client to manage funds for her in-home care.

Impaired Driving

A 58-year-old Guelph woman was charged with failing to provide a breath sample and her licence was suspended for 90 days after she tried to give police her health card at a traffic stop on Paisley Road last Friday night.

Theft

At approximately 4:30 pm Sunday, three men entered a business near Speedvale and Woolwich and while two of them grabbed handfuls of Vichy products, the third filmed on his phone. A clerk was alerted to their presence by hearing laughter, but when she went to investigate saw the men rushing from the store. Approximately $880 worth of Vichy skin creams were stolen. The three males were all described as 18 to 25 years of medium height and build:

  • One was possibly East Asian and wearing a white t-shirt, blue knee-length shorts, a black crossbody bag with white logo and a black baseball cap and was carrying a blue Rexall reusable bag.
  • The second was possibly white and wearing a white t-shirt, black pants, a black crossbody bag, red and white Canada hat and a blue medical mask.
  • The third was possibly white and wearing a white polo shirt with “3” on the sleeve, light knee-length denim shorts, a white baseball cap turned backwards, black sunglasses and was using his phone to record the theft.

A woman described as a white female in her 20s, 5’4” with a small build and blonde hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a plaid vest, black shorts, a black Champion baseball cap, black shoes and a light-coloured fanny pack stole 600 in cosmetics and other products from a business at Woolwich and Speedvale Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm. Last Friday morning, a resident in the area of Edinburgh and Southcreek reported that his work truck had been stolen from his driveway overnight. The caller woke to find broken glass in his driveway and the vehicle, described as a silver 2024 Toyota Tundra, missing. At approximately 10 pm on Sunday, a Kitchener man called police to report that his vehicle had been stolen from his workplace on Silvercreek Parkway North. He was at work and received a collision alert on his phone, then went outside to find his vehicle, a black 2023 Toyota Highlander, gone and broken glass on the ground. if you have any information, call Constable Jeff Reid at 519-824-1212, ext. 7447, or email jreid [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing stolen property under $5,000, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, uttering threats and nine counts of breaching probation after police spotted the suspect downtown on Wednesday afternoon.


On Monday afternoon a 35-year-old Guelph man was located downtown and arrested for robbery and assault for a dispute between a group of people and one woman walking her dog early in the morning on July 24. Two Guelph women, aged 38 and 40, were previously arrested on the same charges.

Traffic

Just before 11 pm last Saturday night, police were called about a suspicious vehicle on the University of Guelph campus. A patrol saw the vehicle near Stone and Victoria, and it fled at very high speed southbound on Victoria Road. The vehicle was a white Volvo CX30 with a black hatchback and tinted windows. It had Wisconsin licence plates which had previously been reported stolen. Just before 4 pm last Friday, police were called to a townhouse complex on Poppy Drive East. A seven-year-old was crossing a driveway within the complex when he was struck by a vehicle, sustaining minor injuries and the driver left the scene. The vehicle is described as a white 2014-2017 Honda Civic with licence plates containing ‘CE’. The driver was described as a possibly Arabic woman, 30-40 years of age and wearing a white hijab. A 58-year-old Guelph man was transported to hospital in stable condition with head and arm injuries after being thrown from his motorcycle during a collision with a car at Edinburgh and Cedar Wednesday evening.


Just before 9 am on Thursday, emergency services were called to Harvard Road near Youngman Drive where a woman in her 70s stepped off the curb into the path of a cyclist and was struck and knocked to the ground. The pedestrian was transported to hospital for treatment. No charges will be laid.

Other Notes

Between 6 and 6:30 pm last Saturday, an employee of a downtown business got into her vehicle in the area of Baker and Chapel when a male approached and stood beside the car. She then noticed he was exposing himself and he tried to reach into her car. The man was described as white, late 20s, medium height, slim build with black curly hair. He was wearing blue basketball shorts, a loose-fitting blue t-shirt and a blue baseball cap. A small black hatchback leaving the parking lot at a high rate of speed, though it is not clear if the vehicle was involved. Just after 6 am on Monday, a Rogers technician called police after discovering around 300 metres of damaged fibre optic cables near Kortright and the Hanlon. While the technician was on scene, he observed a ladder on the ground and saw a male carrying a tool described as a long pole with a saw on the end who fled when he saw the technician, leaving the ladder behind. A section of cable was removed but it has no value as scrap so the man just cause more than $50,000 in damage.
