POLICE NOTES: Butter Heist, Glock Seized, and More Stolen Airbags

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 17-year-old Guelph male was brought to police headquarters by his father on Tuesday, and was arrested for assault with a weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a sentence order for a July 15 incident where two people were attacked by someone using fireworks.


A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault on Sunday afternoon after a man inserted himself into a argument between a man and a woman. The victim was puncheed and kicked by the other man several times.


A 26-year-old Guelph man is charged with sexual assault for a June 23 incident where a man was receiving treatment in a local facility when he inappropriately touched a worker.


A 28-year-old Guelph man is charged with obstruct police, assault to resist arrest, unauthorized possession of a weapon, two counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of breaching court orders after police stopped a vehicle near Cardigan and Norwich last Saturday afternoon. Officers recovered a spring-assisted knife and quantities of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine in individual packages, as well as a scale, cash and unused baggies.

Break-Ins

Police were called to a business near Woodlawn and Imperial on Friday at 6:30 am, and investigation revealed a male smashed a glass door with a sledgehammer before prying a small safe out of place and dragging it outside. Officers located the damaged but unopened safe a short distance away. The pattern was repeated at business at Elmira and Woodlawn, and two business in the plaza at Harvard and Gordon. The suspect in each incident was described as a male wearing a hoodie, grey track pants, a baseball cap with Louis Vuitton pattern, Reebok backpack, gloves and a face mask. A 35-year-old Guelph woman was arrested and charged with break and enter and theft of motor vehicle for the August 2 break-in at a house near Ontario and Arthur where the car keys were stolen, and then the car was stolen.

Drugs

A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of breaching probation on Tuesday after members of the BEAT Unit received a warrant to search a residence at London and North. The search revealed a quantity of cocaine, crystal meth, cash, a digital scale, drug packaging, a billy club and a folding knife.


A 23-year-old Brampton man was charged with pointing a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing a prohibited firearm with ammunition, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Early Saturday morning, police received reports of several men involved in physical altercation on Macdonell. Witnesses reported one of the men was pointing a handgun at other involved parties, and during subsequent searches officers recovered a loaded Glock firearm and a quantity of suspected fentanyl valued at more than $6,000.

An 18-year-old Brampton man was also charged with possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Two Guelph men aged 43 and 22 years old were also charged with possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking in relation to this case.

Impaired Driving

A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in his system, and his licence was suspended for 90 day, after a police patrol early Friday spotted a car squealing its tires as the driver made a fast turn onto Bellevue Street.


A 74-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and her licence was suspended for 90 days after a motorist reported a vehicle driving erratically near Victoria and. Officers caught up with the vehicle at the owner’s address where several branches and more than 20 feet of barbed wire were discovered caught in the vehicle’s undercarriage, and there was also fresh damage to the front of the vehicle.

Theft

A pickup was parked from Friday until Tuesday at a residence near Eastview and Auden, and on Tuesday the owner realized a quantity of wire and Milwaukee power tools were missing from the bed of the truck. An airbag was stolen from a 2018 Honda Civic sometime before 5 am on Monday from outside a residence near Speedvale and Woolwich. The suspect, who was caught on video, is described as a black male, 25-45 years, average height, wearing a grey track suit and black gloves and carrying a blue Wal-Mart reusable bag. This comes just a few weeks after airbags were stolen from 10 Honda Civics in a single weekend at an apartment building on Willow and at a different apartment building on Speedvale Avenue West. Anyone with information about the most recent incident is asked to call Constable Taylor Vajushi-Cooper at 519-824-1212, ext. 7320, email tvajushi-cooper [at] guelphpolice.ca.


At approximately 3:30 pm on Monday, a male entered a business at Gordon and Clair and walked out with two cases of butter valued at approximately $500. The suspect was described as a brown-skinned male, approximately 5’6” and wearing a black t-shirt and black shorts and had a bandage on one leg. Then, an hour later, the same thing happened at a business near Kortright and Edinburgh where a male, described as possibly East Indian, 5’8” with a light-coloured beard and black hair and wearing dark clothing including a t-shirt, filled two bags with butter valued at $300 and fled the area in a white Toyota Corolla. A 23-year-old Guelph man and 22-year-old Guelph woman were charged with possessing stolen property, possessing counterfeit currency and possessing controlled substances Thursday morning after a disturbance near Stone and Scottsdale. A man saw his stolen bicycle in the back of a pick-up, so that’s the stolen property, and a search revealed four counterfeit $100 bills and more than 50 suspected Hydromorphone pills.


Two Guelph women, aged 38 and 40, were arrested downtown early last Saturday morning and charged with robbery and assault for an incident on July 24. A woman walking her dog saw a group of people with whom she had a previous dispute, and the group chased the woman to the front of her building. She was grabbed by the hair, pulled to the ground and repeatedly assaulted and then the suspects smashed her phone and fled with the victim’s backpack which held clothing, identification and electronics. The victim did not seek medical attention.

Traffic

A 26-year-old Halifax man was charged with speeding and stunt driving, and his licence was suspended for 30 days after the Traffic Unit clocked a vehicle doing 135 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone near Speedvale and Imperial. The vehicle, which was not registered to the driver, was impounded for 14 days.


A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving and careless driving after police were called to Gordon and Wellington Sunday afternoon. A driver was travelling well over the speed limit and driving aggressively before entering the intersection and striking another vehicle. His vehicle drove over a curb and came to rest in the parking lot of a plaza.

Other Notes

A 58-year-old Guelph man was charged with committing an indecent act after police were called to Royal City Park to respond to a complainant about a man who was close to the playground when he pulled his pants down to his ankles and relieved himself. He was arrested for failing to comply with an undertaking and three counts of breaching a probation order on Thursday when he went back to the park.


A 24-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for public mischief for a false report of assault on July 15.
