POLICE NOTES: More Crypto Fraud, Speeder Bikes, and Stolen Wallets

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Nothing to report.

Break-Ins

Police are looking for a person described as male, white, medium build, 25-35 years of age, having a short beard, short brown hair, wearing a blue hat with a square logo, a blue t-shirt, dark shorts, white shoes, and wearing a backpack. On Wednesday between 10 and 11 am, a wallet was taken from a car parked on Knightswood Boulevard and the debit and credit cards were used to make purchases at multiple locations throughout the city. On Sunday, police were called to an east-end department store, windows had been broken into and several items within were damaged. Damage is estimated to be in the thousands. Drugs

A 35-year-old Guelph man was arrested for three charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking along with one count of failure to comply with a release order after an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Unit. A search warrant on the suspect’s residence recovered 69.1 grams of cocaine, 41.25 grams of crystal meth, 12 pills of hydromorphone, $2,670 in Canadian currency, and a replica CO2 pellet gun.

Fraud

A Guelph resident lost approximately $97,000 through an online cryptocurrency exchange. The resident had invested in online stocks with a company that claimed to be run out of the U.K, and months later they were advised to withdraw the money from their online investments and place it into a cryptocurrency exchange to make withdrawal of the funds easier. The victim contacted police after they were told they’d have to pay $7,000 as penalty for withdrawing $20,000 from the account.

Impaired Driving

A man was criminally charged with operation while impaired, refuse breath sample, fail to stop after accident and breach of a police undertaking last Saturday evening when police were called to Woolwich Street and the report of a collision. A 48-year-old Guelph woman was charged with two counts of operation while impaired and two counts of failure to stop at an accident after a rear-end collision at Victoria and Elizabeth on Monday morning. The driver that caused the accident was stopped on Hadati Road, but not before the driver reversed into a police cruiser with emergency lights and sirens activated. The driver had more than three-times the legal limit of alcohol in her system. A 62-year-old Guelph woman was transported to Guelph General Hospital with minor injuries.

Theft

A Honda F50 red/white in colour, valued at $1,800, and a Honda F125 red/white in colour, with stickers all over the bike, valued at $ 2,500 were stolen off a trailer that was parked in the driveway of the residence on Deerpath Drive on Wednesday evening. A woman had her wallet stolen during a distraction theft on Wednesday outside a business on Speedvale East and approximately $3,040 in transactions occurring on the stolen credit cards at multiple locations. The suspect is described as male, heavy build, approximately 5’9”, having a dark goatee, wearing glasses, a white button up polo with stripes across the chest, a grey flat cap, black shorts, and black shoes. Approximately $500 worth of fragrances were stolen from a business on Stone Road West Monday at 5:55 pm. The female suspect is described as approximately 5’4”-5’6” in height, medium build, having thick long black hair, wearing a black Nike ball cap, a Nirvana band t-shirt, shorts, and white Crocs. A 2018, White Honda CRV was stolen sometime over the night of Monday, July 29 from a driveway of a residence on Applewood Crescent. If you have any information call Constable Jillian Crawford-Bourke at 519-824-1212, ext. 7583, or email him at jcrawford-bourke [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Approximately $800 in power tools were stolen from a business on Mayfeild Avenue on Sunday at around 3:15 pm. A man and woman entered the business where they were observed on CCTV taking two DeWalt and one Bosch power drills and exiting the store, making no attempts to pay for the tools. The two were seen getting in what was believed to be a Silver Kia Sorrento SUV. An e-bike was reported stolen from an address near Gordon and Hands Drive. The bike, which is described as white with red lettering, DJ Bikes in brand, model Folding Step-Through, and having 4-inch fat tires, was stolen sometime last Friday between 3 and 3:30 pm. A 36-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with theft under $5000 and mischief for the theft of a bicycle from a restaurant on Clair Road last Friday. This same man is alleged to be responsible for several disturbances at commercial establishments throughout Guelph last Thursday and Friday.

Traffic

On Sunday at approximately 6:50 pm, police were on patrol on College Avenue East when they were alerted to a stolen plate on a vehicle by the Automatic Licence Plate Reader (ALPR). The plate was on a white Toyota Camry, and when police attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. If you have any information about this incident, please call Cst. A 39-year-old Guelph man was charged with three counts of operate conveyance while prohibited, driving while under suspension, and theft under $5,000 charges on Tuesday afternoon when members of the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit on Dawson Road spotted  man who was known to be on multiple driving prohibitions.


At 30-year-old Newmarket man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and flight from a peace officer last Friday evening after a patrol observed two motorcycles driving westbound on Speedvale when they drove several red lights. When the two stopped at a restaurant parking lot on Woodlawn, police were able to take one into custody and the other motorcyclists was able to flee.
