POLICE NOTES: The Luring Man, Law Office Fire, and Repeat Creeper Busted

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000 on Wednesday afternoon. A man was asked to leave a downtown social services agency following a physical altercation and then he picked up a brick and threw it through a large window once outside. A woman sitting inside near the window was struck in the back with the brick and also sustained minor cuts to both legs from the broken glass.


A 58-year-old Guelph man was charged with aggravated assault, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and being unlawfully in a dwelling. He’s the second person arrested for a baseball bat attack on a man outside a home at Elizabeth and Huron on March 23.


A 26-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, assault with a weapon, mischief over $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 last Friday. Several vehicles were fired on in an apartment building parking lot on Speedvale and Kathleen with BB guns causing $13,000 in damage.

Break-Ins

At 6:45 pm on Sunday evening, a downtown business at Cork and Norfolk was entered. Surveillance video showed a male rummaging through an office and reception area but nothing appeared to be stolen. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a red jersey (possibly Calgary Flames), grey hoodie, white t-shirt, dark pants, black shoes and a black backpack. A 44-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with break and enter on Wednesday afternoon for a May 4 break-in at a home near Marksam and Stephen. More than $5,000 in Canadian and American cash and jewellery including bracelets, rings and pendants were reported missing.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with four counts of break and enter and one count of trespassing at night after being awoken in the middle of night twice by a man who entered her bedroom.


A 44-year-old Cambridge man is charged with arson, break and enter and mischief under $5,000. Police were called to a law office on Woolwich Street after a witness reported seeing a man smashing several windows and writing on the exterior of the building in orange spray paint before gaining access to the building. Several full cardboard file boxes were set on fire before the male fled. The suspect was a former client.

Impaired Driving

A 48-year-old Kapuskasing man was charged with impaired driving and his licence was immediately suspended for 90 days after a traffic stop on Silvercreek Parkway North Thursday evening after he was seen leaving a licensed establishment.


A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation, possessing a controlled substance and two counts of theft under $5,000 after police were called to Dawson and Woodlawn where a man was found passed out in the driver’s seat of a car. He was placed under arrest for impaired driving, and a search revealed a container of suspected meth in the driver’s door. Plus, further investigation revealed the man had been involved in two gas drive-off thefts earlier this year in which a total of $127 in gas was stolen.

Theft

A restored black 1986 GMC Sierra stolen from a business near Curtis and Monarch sometime late on May 9 or early on May 10 was recover Friday morning in downtown Hamilton. The steering column was damaged. A 2023 Toyota Tacoma belonging to a Burlington company was stolen from Toronto on Sunday was found in a parking lot in the area of Arkell and Colonial on Tuesday afternoon. The car was discovered during a police patrol and it was noticed that one of its side windows was smashed. A 14-year-old Guelph boy was located at home and arrested for taking a vehicle without consent and breaching a bail order after he was at a friend’s house early on Monday morning and he removed the keys for the dad’s car. He started the car and drove it to the end of the driveway before being stopped by the father. The teen was on bail for weapons and other charges with a condition he remain in his own residence between 9 pm and 6 am.

Traffic

Police are investigating after an officer on patrol Tuesday at noon spotted a man on a motorcycle and recognized him and believed him to be a prohibited driver. The cruiser’s lights and siren were activated in an effort to pull the motorcycle over, but the rider fled at a high rate of speed. No pursuit took place. It turns out that the bike, a 2013 green Kawasaki Ninja, had been stolen during the last two weeks from a Cambridge storage unit.


A 62-year-old Windsor man is charged with failing to remain at a collision and driving while suspended for a February 24, 2023 collision at Silvercreek and Woodlawn. A motorist reported he was pulling out of a driveway when another driver sped up and struck the front corner of his car. The two got into a brief verbal altercation before the suspect fled the scene. He was arrested in another jurisdiction on Wednesday.


On Tuesday, a 31-year-old Kitchener man is charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision for an April 6 incident outside Guelph General Hospital where a woman who was seven months pregnant at the time was struck.

Other Notes

Police are now investigating a house fire Wednesday night at an address near Hearn and Inkerman. One neighbour reported hearing an explosion and saw three people crawling out of a second-floor unit onto a roof. The people were rescued from the rood and taken to hospital before they were transported to a Hamilton trauma centre where they remain in serious condition. Police are looking for a black male, medium build, approximately 5’7” to 5’10” with fuzzy black hair, brown eyes and a slight accent who was wearing a black leather jacket, grey shirt and black pants. He was driving a black two-door Honda Civic with dark tinted windows, black rims and rust on the passenger-side front bumper. Last Friday morning, he approached two boys, aged 12 and 11, who were waiting for their school bus near Eastview and Starwood at approximately 7:20 am and he tried to lure them into his car. A 31-year-old Guelph man is charged with committing an indecent act and two counts of breaching a probation order after staff at a business at Willow and Silvercreek Thursday night reported a male had entered the business and pulled down his pants, exposing his genitals to several employees and customers.
