POLICE NOTES: Liquor Thieves Arrested, West End B&E, and Massive Child Porn Bust

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

After midnight Thursday police were called to a disturbance at a residence near Woolwich and Speedvale. Investigation revealed the female tenant was home when a male known to her entered the apartment and confronted her over money he claimed she owed him. When the woman was knocked to the ground, another male on scene intervened. The suspect then pulled out a screwdriver which he used to threaten them both, before fleeing the apartment with the victim’s phone and laptop computer. The investigation is ongoing.


Police are looking for three people that became verbally confrontational with an employee at Stone Road business. A woman hit the employee in the face with her hand and then spat in his face last Saturday night at 8 pm. The woman was described as white, early 30s, thin build with blonde hair with brown roots and a gap in her front teeth and wearing a green dress shirt, camouflage leggings and brown construction boots. She was with two men, both white, early 30s with medium builds. One had black shaggy hair and was wearing a black sweater, black shorts and blue flip-flops. The other had tattoos on both arms and was wearing a blue polo shirt and dark pants. A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault and assault police after a store employee at a business near Gordon and Wellington was attacked on Thursday morning. Officers responded to some screaming and after entering the store they ordered a man to get on the ground, but he ignored them and ran at one officer while throwing punches. He was taken to the floor and arrested. The employee was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.


A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, possessing a controlled substance and breaching probation. On Thursday morning, a man was found sleeping outside a social service agency downtown, and they saw the butt of a handgun in the man’s pocket. When police arrived it was determined that it was an imitation Glock BB gun, but they also found four compressed carbon dioxide cylinders and 37 grams of suspected crack cocaine in a search.


A 55-year-old Guelph man was charged with three counts each of assault and forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, two counts of breaching probation and theft after an adult woman reported to police that she was assaulted and prevented from leaving a motel room and two different apartment units for days at a time. The same man was already under investigation for assaulting another woman.

Break-Ins

Approximately $5,700 in Canadian and American cash and jewellery including bracelets, rings and pendants were reported missing from a home near Marksam and Stephen. Last Saturday afternoon at around 1:30 pm, the homeowner returned home to find the house ransacked and property missing. Neighbours reported that a man knocked on the door after the occupants left that morning, before going to the rear of the home. He’s described as a white male in his 40s, 5’6” to 5’8” and wearing dark clothing including possibly long shorts and carrying a red reusable bag. A 23-year-old Guelph woman was charged with break, enter and commit theft for the April 24 theft of $7,600 in electronics from a downtown church. A 49-year-old Guelph man was charged for the same crime last week.

Drugs

Nothing to report.

Fraud

Police are reminding everyone to be careful when chatting online. On Tuesday, a 20-year-old man contacted police and said that he was chatting through an app with an unknown adult female who claimed to be in the Philippines. A short time later he received a video of himself masturbating and a demand to pay $4,000 or the video would be shared with others. No money was exchanged.

Impaired Driving

A 28-year-old Erin man was charged with failing to stop at an accident and driving with open alcohol, and his licence was suspended for three days after several witnesses reported seeing a pickup truck strike an SUV in a parking lot on Woodlawn West before driving away Thursday night.


A 27-year-old Mississauga man was charged with impaired driving, and his licence was suspended for 90 days after police responded to a complained about an impaired driver in the Stone Road West area Thursday night.

Theft

Police were called to an address near Elizabeth and Huron just after 11 am Monday. Sometime overnight, someone entered the home through a basement window and removed $3,000 in power tools. Last Saturday, Guelph Police, with the assistance of other police services, arrested a 27-year-old man and 35-year-old man in St. Catherines. They were both charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000, obstructing police, possessing identity documents and breaching court order, and the younger of the two was also charged with dangerous driving and has outstanding warrants in 10 other jurisdictions. The arrests were the result of an investigation in the theft of more than $300,000 worth of product from LCBO stores across the province.


A 42-year-old London man was arrested on two counts of theft under $5,000 and two counts of breaching a release order last Friday in relation to a separate LCBO theft. On October 20, 2022, a man and woman attended two liquor stores in Guelph, stealing a total of 45 bottles of alcohol worth more than more than $3,300. The pair were identified by LCBO investigators.


A 59-year-old Guelph woman was charged with eight counts of unauthorized use of a credit card, two counts of possessing a credit card and two counts of breaching probation for the January 7 theft. A wallet was stolen from a volunteer at a downtown church and several purchases where made using her debit and credit cards at various businesses throughout downtown.


A 46-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft, assault and two counts of breaching a probation order last Saturday after an employ of a business on Eramosa saw a man trying to remove a shopping cart from the property and was struck him in the head when he tried to stop the thief.

Traffic

A 27-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while suspended and his vehicle was impounded for a week on Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop on Silvercreek Parkway North.


A 38-year-old Guelph man is charged with obstructing police and driving while suspended after a police patrol on Eramosa Road pulled up behind a grey SUV. The driver abruptly turned into a commercial plaza and went into a business, but he provided a false name to the police when asked.

Other Notes

Two Guelph men were among the 64 people arrested during the province-wide Project Aquatic, which targeted those involved in online child exploitation. The Guelph Police were one of 27 municipal police services working with the OPP for 10 days back in February to identify and arrest those involved in making, possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material. In all, 34 victims were identified, 30 children were safeguarded, 348 charges were laid and 607 devices were seized. In Guelph, a 19-year-old man and 55-year-old man were arrested in separate investigations and are each face charges of possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography.
