POLICE NOTES: Explosive Injury, Hammer Threat, and Fire Truck Accident

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

On Sunday evening, a man tried twice to enter The Manor but was denied entry as he did not have any identification. He returned a third time, pulled out a knife and lunged at the staff member, who was able to move out of the way and was not physically injured. The suspected, who is described as a black male, 5’7” with a thin build and wearing a light-coloured windbreaker with dark shoulders, dark pants, a black baseball cap and a medical mask, was last seen running eastbound on Waterloo Avenue. A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering death threats and three counts of breaching court order after police were called to the area of Carden and Macdonell Thursday morning. A woman reported she had confronted a man she believed stole some of her property, and he had pulled a knife which he pointed at her while uttering threats.


A 32-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault, mischief under $5,000 and being intoxicated in public after a man who had been removed from a downtown business Wednesday returned just after midnight and punched the clerk in the side of the face while his back was turned. The subject then went outside and used a sock filled with rocks to smash the front window, causing approximately $2,000 in damage.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with assaulting police and two counts of breaching a probation order after an officer saw a man enter a downtown business the officer knew he was banned from. The officer escorted the man from the business, but before they could write a ticket, the man tried to walk away and then attempted to punch the officer in the head. He was taken to the ground and arrested.

Break-Ins

A 26-year-old Guelph woman faces charges including break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and several counts of breaching court orders.The chargers are in connection to a break-in at an east-end home under renovation and other thefts, and the woman was arrested Wednesday with a large amount of stolen property, crystal meth and $3,500 cash.

Drugs

A 26-year-old Mississauga man and 26-year-old Brampton man are each charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing a controlled substance. Officers recovered quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, Percocet pills and more than $1,000 cash after members of the Drug Enforcement Unit observed several meetings between the two men at a house near Neeve and Howitt.

Impaired Driving

A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and his licence was immediately suspended for 90 days on Thursday night after police patrolling on Waterloo a vehicle with a headlight and licence plate light both burnt out.

Theft

On Wednesday, police were called to a business near Woolwich and Speedvale after two women stole $3,700 in cosmetics. Both were described as being in their 30s with tanned skin. One had dark hair in a bun and was wearing a long black or dark grey coat or cardigan and black sneakers with white soles, and the other had a heavy build and dark hair in a high bun. She was wearing a grey sweater with a gold chain attached at the neckline, black pants and white sneakers. On Wednesday morning, a man discovered that his pickup truck was missing from the driveway of his residence near Stephanie and Imperial. The truck was a grey 2023 Tacoma with a matching grey bed cap and fishing and hunting stickers on it. A 25-year-old man and 25-year-old woman, both from Maple, were charge with two counts each of theft under $5,000 on Wednesday after they were caught trying to steal more than $3,200 in medication, fragrances and toiletries. The male dropped a jammer device used to prevent anti-theft alarms from sounding while trying to leave.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with robbery and breaching probation after being caught with cigarettes taken from a store near Gordon and Wellington on Monday morning.


Three girls aged 17, 16 and 14 have been arrested and charged with robbery after a fourth girl was beaten up and had her phone stolen last Friday evening. The three girls assaulted the fourth, spitting on her, knocking her to the ground and kicking her before taking the phone and smashing it. It is believed one of the girls recorded the assault.

Traffic

A 18-year-old driver was charged with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle after they received minor injuries in a collision with a fire truck near Victoria and Speedvale Monday afternoon.


A 17-year-old Guelph girl was transported to hospital for treatment of a minor head injury and then given a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act for disobeying a Don’t Walk signal after they were hit by a car while unsafely crossing the street near Victoria and Eastview.


A 35-year-old Puslinch man is charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and driving while suspended. Last Friday evening, a woman was slowing for stopped traffic on Speedvale at Edinburgh when her car was struck from behind. The other driver then switched lanes, mounted a curb and drove across the grass before fleeing the scene.

Other Notes

A 30-year-old Toronto man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, food fraud and failing to comply with a release order after police were called to a downtown business at 1 am last Saturday. A man had tried to leave without paying his bill and then threatened to hit himself in the head with a hammer when confronted by an employee.


A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing an explosive device after he showed up at Guelph General Hospital to be treated for hand injuries. Investigation determined he had made a small explosive device, which went off and caused his injuries.
