POLICE NOTES: Remains Found, Bus Bathroom Break, and Creepy Woman with Bikes

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Missing Person

A man who’s been missing since the end of January was found dead in the area of Speedvale Avenue East and Marlborough Road on Monday. The death is not considered suspicious.

Assault

A 69-year-old Guelph man was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a woman in her 50s was attacked by a man she knows on Wednesday morning. The victim was struck repeatedly in the head with an object while in the driveway, and two other adults intervened. The victim sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of breaching a probation order after a man was stabbed twice in the area of Gordon and Nottingham Thursday night. Two men had been involved in an argument earlier that day, and when police arrived on the scene they found the suspect a short distance away. The victim was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries to the chest and abdomen.


A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon, assaulting police, theft under $5,000 and disobeying a court order after police were called to a disturbance near Willow and Dawson last Friday morning. A woman was threatened and struck in the head with a coffee cup by a man who left, came back and was arrested by police, at which point he spat at one of the officers.


A 13-year-old Guelph boy was charged with attempted robbery, assault with a weapon and two counts of assault for two separate incidents Tuesday evening. In one incident he spat  at couple walking near Scottsdale and Wilsonview and then threw rocks at them, and 20 minutes later he approached another man at Stone and Scottsdale and asked for the man’s shoes before punching him in the back of the head.

Break-Ins

A 22-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter and possessing stolen property after breaking into a home on Edinburgh Road South on Saturday while the owners were gone. The break in was notable for the fact the suspect left a “large bowel movement” in the toilet.

Drugs

A 44-year-old Guelph man was charged with four counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a prohibited weapon, failing to appear in court and failing to comply with a release order. The man was spotted downtown and arrested on an outstanding warrant, and a search revealed quantities of suspected crystal meth, fentanyl, crack, and hydromorphone pills, as well as cash, pepper spray and a spring-activated knife.

Impaired Driving

A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and speeding, and his licence was suspended for 90 days, after police clocked him doing 76 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone on Victoria North.


A 64-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days on Wednesday morning after police received reports of a parked vehicle being struck on Westwood Road. Investigation revealed the man driving the car is prohibited from driving due to an earlier impaired driving conviction.


A 22-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days after police were called to a plaza near Gordon and Wellington Thursday morning and a report of someone asleep in their vehicle for three hours. He was observed to be trying to hide a small baggie containing prescription tranquilizers when the police arrived, and he was observed to have poor concentration and slow movements. His dad’s car was impounded for seven days.


A 44-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation after he was found drinking in his car while parked outside Guelph General Hospital waiting for his wife on Monday evening. Testing showed he had nearly twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 29-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired operation and refusing a breath sample after police were called about a possible impaired driver downtown Tuesday afternoon.


A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days after a Tesla was rear-ended while stopped at a red light Tuesday night at Stone Road and the Hanlon. Tests confirmed that the driver of the other car, which belonged to his girlfriend and is now impounded for seven days, had more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

Approximately $800 worth of tools were stolen from a residential garage Thursday evening in the area of Waterloo and Alma; a saw, two drills and batteries were reported stolen. The suspect was described as an older white male, approximately 5’8” and wearing a black and grey windbreaker, blue jeans and a blue backpack. He walked hunched over. Police found a 2016 Volvo truck, which was reported stolen last Friday, at an address on Southgate Drive on Wednesday morning. It had a trailer attached which did not belong to the owner of the truck. Approximately $10,000 worth of tools were stolen from a trailer parked at a Southgate Drive business overnight on Tuesday morning. Video surveillance showed two people arriving at the address approximately 4:25 am in a dark blue Chevrolet Suburban. The tools were loaded into the SUV, which drove away a few minutes later. A similar Suburban was reported stolen from a north-end business during the same time period, but it is not known if the incidents are related. Police were called to a construction site near Gordon and Gosling on Monday morning after approximately 120 feet of copper wire was stolen from a furnace that was being installed. A 36-year-old Guelph man faces charges including robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, two counts of pointing a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of discharge a firearm endangering life. On Thursday morning, a man went into a store at Speedvale and Stevenson, picked up an item, left without paying and when he was followed outside by employees he pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at them. After the employees ran back inside the male shot the glass door, causing it to shatter, but it was only a BB gun.


A 47-year-old Guelph woman is charged with robbery last Saturday evening when an employee at a Woodlawn West business observed a woman concealing items in her purse and followed her as she attempted to leave the store. He stopped her as she was about to exit, but the woman punched him several times and fled on foot. Police found her walking nearby.

Other Notes

Police are looking for a man who was observed twice recording inside a woman’s apartment in the area of Eastview and Starwood. On Thursday, she went outside with her dog and appeared to startle the man, who walked through a garden and entered another nearby building. He is described as Asian, 30s, approximately 60, 5’3” and wearing a grey sweater, black sweatpants and a baseball cap. At around 6 pm on Wednesday, three 10-year-old girls were walking in the area of Delaware and Mohawk when they were approached by a woman. She told the girls they were pretty and that she had new bicycles in her backyard they could have, pointing generally across the street. The girls continued walking to one girl’s house as the woman followed them. The woman was described as white, approximately 30, tall and thin with blonde hair in a tight bun, missing teeth and a birthmark or tattoo over her right eye. She was wearing a dress or sweater and covered her eyes with her hands while she spoke. A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with mischief under $5,000 and breaching a probation order after he urinated inside a Guelph Transit bus Monday morning. He exited the bus at Imperial and Paisley after peeing on the fare box, and then he tried to get on the bus at the same stop two hours later and was recognized by the driver.
