POLICE NOTES: School Fight, Girl Followed, and Tools Found

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a release order after police were called to an apartment building near Dawson and Willow Thursday night. The involved parties fled before police arrived, but surveillance video showed one of the males holding a knife to the throat of an unknown male who was seated in a car. A 16-year-old Puslinch boy was charged with two counts of assault and a 14-year-old Guelph boy was charged with one count of assault for a January 24 fight at Centennial CVI that reportedly involved about 20 students. As a result of the investigation, officers were able to identify the aggressors and determined the fight was related to another incident a month earlier which involved some of the same parties and was handled internally by the school. A 23-year-old Waterloo woman was arrested last Saturday and charged with assault and mischief under $5,000 for a May 10, 2022 incident were the victim reported that she went outside a south-end home and saw her boyfriend speaking to his former girlfriend. The former girlfriend then grabbed the victim from behind and punched her in the face. She also grabbed the victim’s phone and threw it, breaking the screen.


A 19-year-old Puslinch man was located and arrested for assault causing bodily harm for an incident at a Woodlawn West establishment last Saturday night where two men were involved in a verbal altercation. One man was punched twice in the face, opening a laceration which required three stitches. The two men were known to each other.

Break-Ins

Guelph Police are investigating after being called to a vacant home near Wyndham and Fountain on Tuesday morning where the property manager found that the front window had been covered from the inside and an interior chain lock was latched. In the basement, officers found quantity of copper piping and copper. A 36-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000 and several counts of breaching court orders after being found by the canine unit. The woman was seen leaving a vacant home on Woodlawn near Muskoka, but she was already wanted by police for stealing a tablet and some keys from a vehicle at Guelph General Hospital.

Drugs

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 37-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and speeding, and her licence was suspended for 90 days, after she was clocked doing 82 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone on Gordon near Kortright.

Theft

On Monday evening, a man in his 60s agreed to meet a potential buyer for his white 2008 Toyota Tundra outside a business on Woodlawn Road West. Four males arrived in a black Honda SUV, and after a test drive they agreed on a price of $5,000. One of the men handed the victim cash while the others were removing the licence plates from the truck and then they drove off quickly with the truck while the victim was still counting the cash, which only amounted to $2,500. There were six different distraction-style thefts reported on February 10 at various stores around the city. In most cases the wallets were removed from open purses either left unattended in shopping carts or while owners were carrying them, and in all cases the victims’ debit or credit cards were used at other nearby businesses a short time after the theft.

The male suspect is described as being in his 40s, heavy set, medium height with olive skin and a beard which was dark on the sides and white around his mouth and chin. He was wearing a dark winter jacket, grey track pants, a black toque and black shoes. The female suspect was described as possibly Middle Eastern, 35 to 45 years and wearing a tan jacket, grey winter hat with a large pompom, grey pants, black shoes and a black purse. They were driving a grey Mazda hatchback.

A 33-year-old Guelph woman was charged with theft under $5,000 and obstructing police on Thursday morning after staff at a store on Silvercreek North confronted her for removing tags from merchandise and placing items in her bag. She later gave police a fake name when they stopped her a short distance away.


A 37-year-old Hanover man is charged with theft over $5,000 after around $40,000 in equipment was rented from a Guelph business last July and never returned. The skid steer that was rented turned up at a Hamilton construction after the business ran the steer’s GPS earlier this month. Workers said the man who rented the equipment had stopped showing up for work and they had no way to contact him, but police were able to get in touch with him this week and he turned himself in.


A 39-year-old Guelph woman and 29-year-old Guelph man were both charged with theft under $5,000 after stealing a $2,000 e-bike locked to a concrete post behind a Macdonell Street business.

Other Notes

Police are investigating after an 11-year-old girl reported she was walking home Tuesday afternoon at around 4 pm in the area of Brant and Victoria when she noticed a man following her. When the man tried to talk to her, the girl ran home and told her father, but they were unable to locate the man who’s described as a white male in his 50s, with an average to medium build, a moustache and a deep voice. A 54-year-old Guelph man was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with a probation order after he refused to leave a social service agency downtown on Thursday afternoon.
