POLICE NOTES: Drug Bust, Hit and Run, and Vandalism Investigation

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Thursday morning after a man was approached by the suspect, who was unknown to him, outside a business near Edinburgh and Water.  The pair were involved in a brief verbal altercation before the victim was struck three times in the face and fell to the ground. The suspect was located by officers a short distance away and a large kitchen knife was found in his pocket.

Break-Ins

At around 6 pm on Monday, the owner of a business on Wyndham saw another man burning the rear door and lock of an adjacent business with a small torch. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, 5’9” with a slim build and wearing a grey hooded North Face jacket, black pants and black shoes. Drugs

Responding to a health alert about seven substance-related poisonings in one day last week, the Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into fentanyl trafficking in our community and a suspect was identified. On Tuesday, a 37-year-old woman was arrested and charged with several drug trafficking-related offences after police executed a search warrant at a home in a downtown neighbourhood. Quantities of suspected fentanyl, crystal meth, crack and Hydromorphone with a total value of almost $9,000 were seized, along with $535 in cash, a collapsable baton and a folding knife. A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a controlled substance, break and enter, assault and breaching an undertaking. On Monday afternoon, the Break Enter Auto Theft unit spotted a wanted man in the area of Willow and Dawson. After a foot chase, police took the man into custody and found a small amount of suspected crystal meth, $590 cash and two cellphones in a search, and then later found a jewellery box was stolen from an apartment in a November break and enter.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 27-year-old Ayr woman was charged with impaired driving, possessing a controlled substance and driving without a licence after an officer on patrol discovered an SUV on the sidewalk in the area of Gordon and James on Wednesday morning. The female driver was asleep behind the wheel, vomit was observed on the inside of the driver’s door, and a baggie of suspected cocaine was in the open centre console.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and failing to stop at a collision just after midnight Monday on Bristol Street. The driver of a Honda CRV collided with a parked van, pushing it into a hydro pole and causing extensive damage. The CRV driver then did a U-turn and fled the scene.


A 38-year-old Thornhill woman was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample after an intoxicated woman was reported leaving The Manor at 2:30 am on Sunday.


A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after investigating a collision on Mountford Drive where a man was driving his pick-up truck at a high rate of speed, lost control, and struck a parked vehicle and two trees. No injuries were reported.

Theft

Approximately $10,000 in tools were stolen from a construction site near Delhi and Emma streets. Police were called to the scene Thursday morning, and it’s believed that entry was gained through a window sometime overnight. Officers on patrol in the area of Southgate and Clair found a 53-foot trailer reported stolen from Halton Region on Monday on the shoulder of the road. Out of the original 19 pallets inside, police only found 14 and three of them were empty. More Pokemon card thievery is afoot after $600 in cards were stolen from a Stone Road business on Friday night. The first suspect was described as a white male, late 20s, medium build, black hair with a beard and pierced right nostril. He was wearing a white tank top, white jacket, black Chanel hat and jeans. The second was an Asian female, late 20s, medium build and wearing a blue winter jacket, black pants and black shoes. One of the suspects dropped their cell phone while escaping. A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 in another jurisdiction after getting caught on camera parking a stolen Toyota Matrix at a gas station on Speedvale Avenue East.


A 29-year-old Guelph woman faces several charges including three counts of possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of occupying a stolen vehicle, several counts of driving while prohibited, failing to comply with court orders and failing to attend court. She was connected to two different stolen vehicles, one found at the scene of a collision in November 2022, and one found in the parking lot of Guelph General Hospital last month.


A 32-year-old Guelph woman was charged with robbery, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, four counts of driving while disqualified and two counts of breach of probation on Sunday afternoon. An elderly couple were driving in the area of Speedvale and Lewis when they saw a woman lying at the side of the road with bare feet and stopped to check on her. The woman quickly stood up and got into the driver’s seat of the victims’ car. The car was reversed, nearly striking another vehicle and dragging the victims with the doors until the husband was able to reach in and put the car in park.

Traffic

Police are looking for a hit-and-driver who struck a young woman in her 20s at around 3:10 pm on Thursday afternoon at Imperial and Westwood. The vehicle was described as a grey sedan, possibly a Nissan Sentra, driven by a black male in his 30s. The pedestrian was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A 43-year-old Huron County man turned himself in to police Wednesday and was charged with mischief over $5,000 and failing to stop at a collision for a February 3 incident where a Waterloo man reported that he was followed into a Woodlawn West parking lot by another driver. The other driver kneed the victim’s door, causing a large dent, then reversed and struck the front of the victim’s Mercedes. A short time later, the two stopped in another parking lot and the suspect broke off the side mirror of the victim’s car. Over $15,000 in damage was caused.


A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and failing to stop for a school bus on Monday afternoon on Arkell near Ridgeway. The car was doing 71 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone, and when the police moved to conduct a traffic stop, the car sped past a stopped school bus actively unloading students with its stop sign activated.

Other Notes

Police are investigating the vandalism of several bus shelters with pro-Palestinian messages this week. They report that some shelters have sustained damage that could be in the thousands of dollars.
