New PA Day Date for Solar Eclipse

Following up on the Ministry of Education’s recognition about the importance for school boards to prioritize safety, and after consulting with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, the City of Guelph and County of Wellington, both school boards have decided to move the date of April’s PA Day from Friday April 19 to Monday April 8 due to the solar eclipse. According to an Upper Grand District School Board media release, “We are making this adjustment due to the fact that the solar eclipse is set to occur during school dismissal, when students will not have full supervision and will be travelling home.”

New Children and Youth Services Building Open

The new home for Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington and the Grove Youth Wellness Hub is now open at 737 Woolwich Street in Guelph. The three-floor building will welcome 9,000 local children, youth, and families in need of mental health and developmental services support each year according to a media release, and a formal grand opening will take place in the spring.

The Grove’s offices will be located on the first floor while the second floor has a commercial kitchen and multi-purpose spaces and the CMHA Waterloo Wellington administrative offices will be on the third floor. Half of the first floor and all of the second floor will be home to the children’s services team, which includes child psychiatry, crisis, youth outreach, intensive service co-ordination, childcare and early years programming, and walk-in service for children, youth and families every Tuesday afternoon.

“After many years of dreaming, planning and constructing, we are so excited and grateful to be able to open our doors to support the wellness of children, youth and their families in Guelph Wellington,” said the CEO of CMHA WW Helen Fishburn in a statement. “We have created this new building, in generous partnership with Vesterra and many others in our community, to be a place of care and hope for young people who are struggling. Our doors are open – we are here for you.”

Also for Family Day, the Government of Ontario is offering free fishing around between Saturday and Monday.

There will be a community celebration to mark the retirement of Guelph Library CEO Steve Kraft at the main library from 4 to 6 pm on Thursday February 29.

Ed Video Media Arts Centre is running three bi-weekly 50/50 fundraisers starting on February 29.

The Upper Grand District School Board is collecting feedback about the 2024-2025 school year calendar.

The County of Wellington’s Economic Development Division won the 2023 Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) Award for Inclusive Community Based Initiatives and Programming for their ‘Wellington Welcomes’ campaign.

New and Upcoming Construction

There will be an open house about stage #2 about the York Road Improvements between Brockville and Victoria on Monday February 26 at 6:30 pm at City Hall. Construction is expected to begin on April 2.
