POLICE NOTES: Still Missing, Trading Card Theft, and Church Disruption

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Missing Person

Break-Ins

A 31-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter and breaching a probation order on Tuesday after officers were patrolling near Victoria and College and they located an insecure building. Officers entered the building and found a man inside with a large amount of personal property.


A 37-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and breach of probation after a security guard discovered that business in Old Quebec Street had been broken into. Video surveillance showed a woman with her face covered forcing her way into the business and making off with approximately $1,400 in product. She was located a short distance away and arrested.

Fraud

An elderly Guelph couple were defrauded with a so-called ‘grandparent scam’ this week after they were called by someone they believed was their son-in-law asking for help. A second man came on the line claiming to be a lawyer who said that the son-in-law had injured someone in a collision and needed to pay $7,000 to be released from custody. Later that afternoon, a man cam to their house to pick-up the $7,000 in cash.

That man is described as a black male in his late 20s or early 30s, 5’9” with a thin build. He was wearing a dark winter jacket, white collared shirt, dark dress pants, a black toque and a medical mask. A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with fraud over $5,000 Monday after turning himself into police. The suspect sold a 2016 Volkswagen Passat to Cambridge man on December 3, and a few weeks later the buyer discovered that there was an active lien from a financing company for almost $28,000 on the car when he tried to register it.


A 60-something Guelph man who had already lost more than $750,000 in a cryptocurrency fraud, lost another $12,000 in a similar scam. Last Friday, the man reported that he was recently contacted by someone who claimed he could help him recoup some of the losses from the earlier fraud. The victim created an account at an online financial institution and downloaded an app which gave the scammer access to his cellphone. During a series of transactions over a two-week period, almost $12,000 was transferred out of the victim’s account.

Impaired Driving

A 46-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after a collision on Eramosa near Orchard last Friday. A car was slowing behind a vehicle which was turning when it was hit from behind. No injuries were reported, but the charged driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system, and he had his teenage daughter in the car too.


A 38-year-old Ariss man was charged with impaired driving early Sunday morning after a resident on Paisley Road reported that a man was passed out in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle in the parking lot. When the man was wakened, he was observed to have slurred speech and officers could see open alcohol containers inside the vehicle.

Theft

Just before 5 am on Thursday morning,  police were called to an address near Clairfields and Gibbs, where the owner of a Jeep Wrangler apparently stopped the theft of her car by activating it remotely. Surveillance video showed two men getting into the car at around 4:45 am, and then running away towards a white SUV, possibly a Jaguar, parked just down the street. One male was wearing grey jogging pants and a black jacket and the other was wearing all black. Two men tried to steal a large number of NFL trading cards from a store on Woodlawn near Woolwich Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 pm, but staff members foiled the plan.

  • The first suspect was described as a male in his 20s with tanned skin and a black ponytail with his head shaved on the sides. He was wearing a black puffy coat, light grey track pants and blue Nike shoes.
  • The second was also a male in his 20s with tanned skin. He was wearing a black jacket, dark green track pants, blue Nike shoes and a medical mask.

At around 8:30 am on  Tuesday morning, a resident near Pine Ridge and Periwinkle reported that his black 2022 Ram was missing. Surveillance video showed someone approaching the vehicle just before 5 am and gaining entry before the truck was driven away. A Kitchener man called police on Monday afternoon to report that his 2004 GMC Sierra pick-up was stolen from a parking lot near Michener and Minto. It is described as grey with a fifth-wheel trailer attachment and large steel toolbox in the bed. The suspect, who is described as wearing a black winter coat with the hood up, dark pants and black and white shoes, arrived at around 11 am in a dark-coloured pick-up. A white 2004 GMC Sierra stolen from the driveway on Victoria near Hadati on December 29 was found in Brant County Wednesday with severe front-end damage. Also, someone went to the trouble of setting it on fire. The investigation is going.


A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft under $5,000 after he pretended to help a woman who was passed out on a bench inside Old Quebec Street but instead stole $300 in cash inside an envelope inside her shopping bag.


A 34-year-old Guelph woman and 32-year-old Guelph man are each charged with theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and possessing an identity document after a shoplifting call last Friday evening. They were arrested near a store on Woodlawn West when police found $200 worth of trading cards and stolen identification on them. Police also found a canister of dog spray and approximately $840 worth of suspected crystal meth, which is why the woman is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon, assault with a weapon and possessing a controlled substance.

Traffic

A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and several Highway Traffic Act after police spotted a pick-up truck driving dangerously along Niska Road Thursday morning. When the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop near Whitelaw Road, the driver initiate pulled over before speeding away. Police caught up with him again at Whitelaw and Fife.


The 64-year-old man  was charged with careless driving after a potion of Woodlawn Road East was closed for several hours last Saturday. A dump truck knocked down Rogers lines, so the road was closed while crews repaired the damage, which was caused by the raised bucket of the truck.

Other Notes

A 45-year-old Guelph man was arrested and  held for a bail hearing Thursday after officers a family dispute near College and Vanier on Wednesday afternoon. While speaking to a man at the scene, officers determined he was wanted on warrants for charges including mischief, theft, failing to appear in court and breaching court orders.


A 41-year-old Guelph woman was charged with breaching a bail condition and breaching a probation order on Monday morning after she showed up again at a downtown church despite being repeatedly warned not to attend due to disruptive behaviour.
