POLICE NOTES: Stolen Cosmetics, Enough is Enough, and Third Bust at Same Eatery

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 51-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and uttering threats after the staff of a downtown business overheard two men talking about being pepper sprayed Tuesday. When police arrested the one man, he was transported to the police station where the suspect threatened officers and then spit at one of them while being removed from the cruiser.


A 20-year-old Brampton man was arrested for assault with a weapon, uttering threats and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions last Friday after assaulting staff members at a downtown restaurant that he had been repeatedly banned from. He was arrested for assault at the end od December after spitting in another employee’s face and shoving him and then arrested again the day after that for breaching a release condition.

Break-Ins

Police Service are looking for someone who broke into a storage room at an apartment building near Paisley and Elmira are around 7 am on January 3. He kicked open the door and took a number of items including a battery and charger for a lime green and black electric lawnmower. The suspect is described as male, wearing a dark winter coat with fur on the hood, a red and black toque, green camo pants, black gloves and a black backpack with brown buckles. A pick-up truck and $30,000 worth of tools were stolen from a business near Southgate and Clair sometime late Saturday or early Sunday. The suspects entered a storage container after cutting off a lock and while the truck was later recovered, the tools were not. Drugs

Fraud

Impaired Driving

Two Guelph men, aged 34 and 28, were charged with impaired driving, and their licences were suspended for 90 days after they were each arrested for failing a roadside breath test early Saturday morning at a RIDE check near Silvercreek and Waterloo. The 28-year-old was also charged with possessing a controlled substance after he was found to be in possession of a small amount of suspected cocaine.

Theft

Two vehicles stolen from Guelph were found outside the city limits on Tuesday. First, a Ford F550 pick-up stolen from a south-end business last weekend (see above) was recovered in Hamilton, and  a 2016 Freightliner transport truck stolen from a different south-end business during the last weekend of December was found just south of the city. Investigations into both vehicle thefts are ongoing.


Police are also investigating a stolen blue Nissan Kicks that was found outside a business near Gordon and Kortright Thursday morning at 6:35 am, parked at the rear of the building. The vehicle, which had been stolen from Wellington County, had one window smashed out, plus all four tires were flat. The investigation is ongoing.


Nearly $2,800 worth of lipstick was stolen from a business near Gordon and Clair on Monday evening at 6:15. Three people entered the cosmetics department and put more than 80 packages of Chanel lipstick  in their bags before they left the store.

  • The first suspect is described as a white male, mid-20s, average height and build with black hair and an unshaven face. He was wearing a green track suit with white writing on the front and black running shoes.
  • The second was a white female, mid-20s, with a medium build and long black hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a long black hooded winter jacket over a black dress.
  • The third suspect was also a white female in her mid-20s with a thin build and long black hair. She was wearing a beige coat over a grey dress and was carrying a small child in a pink coat.

Someone tried to steal a Toyota Tundra from a residence near Farley and Pine Ridge at around 5:45 am on Tuesday morning. The victim was alerted by his alarm going off, and his son saw someone running from the area. The passenger window on the truck was broken and part of the vehicle’s console was torn out. More than $3,000 worth of makeup was stolen from a business near Stone and Scottsdale just after 2 pm last Friday afternoon. An older woman was speaking to employees in the cosmetics area and appeared to be distracting them while two younger women removed more than $3,000 in Dior cosmetics in their coats. A 46-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery on Sunday after the loss prevention officer at a store on Woodlawn and Woolwich spotting someone stealing electronics. The employee approached the man, who refused to return the items and a physical struggle began, which resulted in the employee injuring his hand. Approximately $275 worth of product was recovered.

Traffic

A 21-yearold Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving, plus his licence was suspended for 30 days, after he was clocked doing 91 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone on York Road near Beaumont Crescent Wednesday afternoon.


A 82-year-old was transported to hospital for treatment after staff at a Silvercreek North business called for help Thursday morning when she started shopping in the store covered in blood. The woman had driven into the parking lot and struck a light post before parking her car and then went inside like normal. Staff reported that she seemed confused but told them that she didn’t need assistance.

Other Notes

A 38-year-old Guelph woman was arrested on Wednesday and charged with obstructing police for giving false statements in regards to an August incident around an assault in a motor vehicle. She had claimed that she didn’t know who assaulted the man by smashing a glass jar against his head, but it terms out that she did know the suspect.


A 31-year-old Guelph man was arrested on outstanding warrants for property crimes, breaching court orders  and missing a court date earlier this month after police on patrol downtown Wednesday morning recognised him as being wanted.


A 25-year-old was arrested for three counts of mischief, three counts of criminal harassment and two counts of failing to comply with a release order on Monday after 30 instances of a man yelling, playing loud music, banging on their walls and floors, damaging their property and attempting to enter their units at a Waterloo Avenue apartment building. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released with conditions to stay away from the apartment building and have no contact with the victims.


A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with failing to comply with an undertaking after he never showed up to an October appointment at police headquarters to provide his fingerprints. Police recognised him as a wanted man after arriving at a business on Silvercreek North for an unrelated matter.
