MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for December 11, 2023

This last month of the year, Heritage Guelph is looking to the future, and also a little bit to the past. There are no specific heritage designations on the agenda, but staff will be looking for work on designations to do in the new year, and there’s still a lot of work to do on that front. Also, when will Heritage Guelph be meeting to take care of that business, and what about some of the mistakes of the past?

NOTE #1: If you would like to delegate to one of the items at the meeting, get in touch with the committee liaison before Friday December 8 at noon at jack.mallon [at] guelph.ca or by calling (519) 837-5616, ext. 3872.

NOTE #2: This meeting will take place virtually on Cisco Webex. You can find the link on the agenda page for this meeting on the City’s website.

Heritage Guelph Facilitation Exercise Final Report – You may recall that there was once some friction between Heritage Guelph and Guelph heritage staff stemming from the work on the Cultural Heritage Action Plan. The report outlines how the staff have tried to improve the working relationship between them and committee, but it also notes that none of the committee members who where involved at the start of this process in late 2020 and early 2021 are still a part of Heritage Guelph. Anyway, it’s done now.

Heritage Guelph 2024 Meeting Schedule – Pretty straightforward, this is the schedule for the Heritage Guelph meetings for next year. You’ll note that with the exception of January and August, the meeting is now on the first Monday of the month instead of the second.

2024 Part IV Designation Priorities– No formal direction comes with this item, but attached to the report is a list of about 40 different properties that staff would like to receive committee’s consideration for their next slate of approvals next year, which, you may recall, will be the last year before all buildings listed – but not designated – will be removed. Among the potential designations are the Arboretum Centre, the Rutherford Conservatory, Victory Public School, the Schnurr building at Gordon and Wellington, an old farm on Niska Road, and the Kloepfer Gallery on Paisley.
