POLICE NOTES: The Sleeping Thief, Vintage Car Taken, and Attempted Robbers Wanted

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault after approaching a staff member at a business at Gordon and Wellington and punched him in the right temple, chin and mouth, causing some minor bleeding. The attack came after the suspect was ejected from that establishment over a verbal argument.


A 32-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of assault and obstructing police. On Tuesday afternoon, two young women, aged 14 and 15, were out walking when they were approached by an unknown man. He touched one girl’s face and stroked the other’s arms before leaving the area on foot. Police found him a short while later and he refused to identify himself when asked.

Break-Ins

A 32-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000, wearing a disguise while committing an offence, obstructing police, possessing a controlled substance and two counts of breaching court orders. The man was wanted for a break and enter at a parking garage at a downtown apartment building where he abandoned the stolen truck he entered the garage with.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter, operation while impaired, possessing controlled substances, several counts of possessing stolen property and two counts of breaching court orders last Saturday morning. Police caught up with him after he was found slumped over in a running vehicle parked on Ontario Street last Saturday morning, following a break-in at the Market Parkade earlier that morning. The vehicle he was in was also stolen.

Fraud

A 34-year-old Etobicoke woman was charged with uttering a forged document after attempting to open an account at a bank near Kortright and Edinburgh with fraudulent identification.

Impaired Driving

A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and stunt driving and his licence was suspended for 90 days after police spotted a vehicle doing a burn-out, with a large amount of smoke and the smell of burning rubber in the area of Eastview and Mountford after midnight Friday morning.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and his licence was suspended for 90 days after they were clocked leaving the Manor after 2 am on Friday at a high rate of speed.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation and possessing a controlled substance and his licence was suspended for 90 days after police were called to Riverview and Wolseley where a man was found asleep behind the wheel, apparently under the influence of suspected fentanyl.


A 25-year-old Hillsburgh man was charged with impaired driving and his licence was suspended for 90 days after they lost control of their car on Meyer Drive and hitting a fire hydrant, which became dislodged. The man fell asleep as he was being assessed by paramedics on the scene.

Theft

A 1983 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue, which is a car, was stolen from an address near Wellington and Gordon sometime on Tuesday afternoon. Someone gained access to an Imperial Road North apartment through an insecure window sometime on Wednesday and stole a Playstation 5 system, iPad and two pairs of Nike running shoes. Cash and three tablet computers were stolen from a business near Gordon and Harvard sometime before Thursday afternoon. Access was gained through a forced rear door. Two men wearing motorcycle helmets tried to rob a bank at Clair and Gordon Tuesday afternoon, but they left empty handed. The first male was described as possibly black, 5’7” with a slim build and wearing a black sweater, orange or red pants, black gloves and a black helmet covered in white tape. The second male was described as brown-skinned, 5’7” with a slim build and facial hair and wearing a grey and black Nike sweater, grey track pants, grey and black Nike shoes, black gloves and a black helmet covered with white tape. A matte grey 2019 Jeep Cherokee was stolen from the driveway overnight and discovered missing last Friday morning at an address near Clair and Clairfields. The SUV contained a quantity of sports equipment including a pitching machine, baseball uniforms, more than 100 baseballs and golf clubs with a total value of approximately $9,000. Over $2,500 worth of Milwaukee tools and batteries were stolen from a building under renovation near Paisley and Norfolk sometime last weekend. The break-in was discovered on Sunday. The 17-year-old Guelph male was arrested for robbery after three males in ski masks tried to rob a team selling a pair of Apple AirPods. Four other males in the car – ranging in age from 14 to 19 – will participate in a diversion program instead of facing charges.

Traffic

Police are looking for a black Nissan Rogue with a broken windshield driven by a possibly Asian male in his 50s. At 3:30 pm in Thursday, an adult male cyclist was struck at the area of Edinburgh and Merion, and although the driver of the Nissan stopped briefly to check on the cyclist, they almost immediately left the scene heading southbound on Edinburgh. A three-vehicle collision was reported at Speedvale and Imperial on Monday afternoon. The collision caused two of the vehicles to burst into flames. Speedvale Avenue was closed in both directions for more than an hour. One driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries.


Emergency services were called to Woodlawn and Michener on Monday afternoon for a collision between a car and a motorcycle. A portion of Woodlawn Road eastbound was closed for a short time. The motorcyclist was transported to hospital with a reported ankle injury.

Other Notes

Police are looking for witnesses after a youth was seriously injured Sunday between 7 and 9 pm in the area of Janefield and Scottsdale. No criminal activity was reported in the incident. A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with arson causing damage to property, arson with disregard for human life and breaching probation after firefighters were called to a downtown apartment building Tuesday morning. A fire started in the second floor hallway was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling, obstructing police, possessing a weapon contrary to an order and two counts of breaching probation after police responded to reports of an unwanted male at a Woolwich address last Saturday night. He was on probation with a condition he not attend that address, plus he had a spring-loaded knife on his person.
