POLICE NOTES: Dognapper Found, Stolen Gumballs and Fake Cheque Gets Excavator

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 19-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with two counts of assault for two incidents last week. On Tuesday evening an adult male was sitting in St. George’s Square when he was approached by another male. The second male accused him of uttering a racial slur before punching the victim in the mouth. A struggle ensued during which the suspect mimicked shooting the victim in the head. On Wednesday, as the victim was talking to police about what happened Tuesday when the accused walked up and placed a hand on the victim’s throat in a choking manner.


One 17-year-old Guelph was charged with Possession Of A Weapon For A Dangerous Purpose and two counts of Failure To Comply With Undertaking, and another 17-year-old Guelph male was charged with Possession Of A Weapon For A Dangerous Purpose and Unauthorized Possession Of A Weapon – Spring Assisted Knife. Last Sunday afternoon at a parking lot near Stone and Edinburgh, police were responding to a report of a firearm, but the closest thing to a gun they found was a black imitation firearm tucked behind the rear driver side tire of the car. They did find that knife though.

Break-Ins

On Tuesday morning, police were called to a business on Victoria near Elizabeth after a man cut a hole in a fence sometime overnight to gain entry to the compound and stole a generator and trash pump with a total value of $3,400. The first suspect is described as a male of average height and weight. He was originally wearing a camouflage hoodie and later a light-coloured hoodie with a blue square logo on the front. He was also wearing black pants, a black backpack and a blue medical mask and was riding a red bicycle with yellow front forks. The second suspect was wearing a blue medical mask and driving a red Nissan Rogue SUV. Just after midnight Wednesday, police were called to a business on Silvercreek near Willow after two men broke in by smashing the glass front door with a rock. A small amount of cash was stolen from the register and there was $600 in damage. The first suspect was wearing a black jacket with logos on the left shoulder and a reflective stripe on the hood, dark pants, a dark mask and gloves. The second was wearing a dark hoodie, red shirt, dark pants and a dark face mask. A break-in at the offices of Onward Willow near Willow and Edinburgh saw three laptops taken as well as a lanyard containing keys. Entry was gained after the keys were removed from a lockbox that was smashed open. Drugs

Three Guelph women– aged 41, 42 and 44 – were charged with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a weapon, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breaching court orders on Thursday morning. Earlier this month, the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit began an investigation into a woman trafficking controlled substances at an address near Waterloo and Woodycrest. Search warrants were obtained for three apartment units at that location and 13 grams of cocaine with a street value of approximately $1,300 was recovered along with a digital scale contaminated with drug residue, multiple cellphones and a cannister of pepper spray.

Impaired Driving

A 32-year-old Guelph man was charged with Operation While Impaired, Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration 80 Plus, and Turn – Not In Safety after a two-vehicle collision at Paisley and the Hanlon just after noon last Saturday.


A 47-year-old Mississauga man was charged with Operation While Impaired and Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration 80 Plus, plus his license was suspended for 90 days after police found a man sleeping in the driver’s seat of his car in a parking lot near Watson and Eastview.

Theft

A vintage gumball machine loaded with jellybeans and gumballs that had not been replenished in four years was stolen from a Woolwich Street business. When staff arrived on Tuesday they found a glass door smashed, and a male suspect wearing a black hoodie with the hood up, blue jeans and black shoes which appeared to have a yellow stripe up the back was identified. A Kubota excavator had been listed for sale on a popular website, and an interested buyer contacted the seller about buying it, even offering a copy of his driver’s licence and a certified cheque in the amount of $132,000. Three men picked up the excavator on Saturday and two days later, when the seller tried to deposit the cheque, he was told that the account had been closed.

Now police are looking for three men who are all described as short Asian males driving a black Chevrolet pickup with dual rear wheels and a large trailer. A black 2016 Dodge Durango was stolen from the driveway of a residence near Merganser and Ptarmigan last weekend. The SUV had two car seats installed and a dent in the middle of the rear bumper. On Monday morning, police were called to a building under construction near Woolwich and Powell after someone gained access by forcing open a boarded-up window sometime over the weekend. About $10,000 in tools were stolen including drills, saws and batteries. A 28-year-old Guelph man was arrested for break and enter and robbery this week for an August 1 incident where a man broke in to a York Road residence, pushed the victim and caused him to fall down, and then stole the owner’s dog.

Traffic

A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving, and his driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 30 days after being stopped doing 112 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone on Maltby Road near the Hanlon.

Other Notes

Police are looking for a red sedan similar to a Chevrolet Cruze and a woman described as an older white female with brown or white hair after a 12-year-old girl came home from school on Thursday and told her dad that a woman pulled over on Ediburgh near London and asked her if she would like to enter the vehicle and go for candy. The child declined and ran home, and the car was last seen heading north on Edinburgh. A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with the rare count of trespassing at night after a woman called police before 5 am on Thursday after being awakened by a noise and observing someone sitting in a chair on her fourth-floor balcony. Police arrived and found the man on the roof of the building wearing only underwear and appearing confused.


A 31-year-old Guelph male was arrested for committing an indecent ac at the main library on Monday morning. The suspect began acting in a belligerent manner and screaming at staff, even after responding officers spoke to him. He then walked away,  pulled down his pants and expose his buttocks to everyone in the area, including several children.


A 26-year-old woman has been charged with False Alarm Of Fire after she tried to get access to an apartment building near College and Edinburgh on Monday morning, and when he was unable to gain access, she pulled the fire alarm and left the building on foot.
