POLICE NOTES: Another Drug Bust, Safe Semester Coming, and Accidental Surrender

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Safe Semester Starts Next Weekend!

The Guelph Police Service says that they will be deploying additional resources as the annual Project Safe Semester kicks off on Friday. Residents can expect to see additional police and bylaw enforcement officers deployed to address the anticipated increase in calls for service related to the beginning of the school year.

Beginning Thursday, September 7, nighttime road closures will be implemented downtown. On Thursday through Saturday nights from 10 pm until 4 am, Macdonell Street will be closed between the Macdonell Street parking lot and the West Parkade, while Wyndham Street North will be closed between Carden Street and Cork Street. No vehicles will be allowed within the closed areas.

Assault

A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, fraud and breaching probation after pulling a knife in the middle of a loud argument at a downtown restaurant on Monday evening.


A 26-year-old Guelph woman was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, uttering death threats and theft under $5,000 after she tried to take a suitcase from a Stone Road store on Saturday evening. She returned later with a cart full of reusable shopping bags and when staff asked her to open the bags to check for stolen merchandise she charged at an employee with her cart and uttered a death threat.

Break-Ins

Two units in the same building in the Exhibition Park area were broken into last Saturday. Jewelry including a wedding ring, gold pocket watch and several necklaces and earrings with a total value of more than $4,000 were reported missing. Drugs

The Break Enter Auto Theft Unit as well as the Drug Enforcement Unit and Tactics and Rescue Unit executed search warrants at a home just north of the city early on Wednesday morning. During the search, officers recovered more than 100 grams of suspected fentanyl, 56 grams of suspected cocaine and more than 500 Oxycocet pills with a total combined street value of more than $20,000. They also recovered several weapons including a silver revolver-style handgun, two replica firearms, brass knuckles, a butterfly knife and a cane with concealed sword as well as stolen property including a 2014 motorcycle, bicycle, tools and cosmetic products.

Four women and two men, all from Guelph and ranging in age from 29 to 71, face dozens of drug, weapons and property charges.nThe charges stem from an investigation that begin in mid-July when BEAT started conducting surveillance on several individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking and property crimes.

Impaired Driving

A 57-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Saturday evening after he got into his illegally parked car on Goodwin Drive while police and bylaw were waiting for a tow truck to take the car away.


A 68-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired care and control on Sunday evening after a man was found asleep in the driver’s seat of a car at Home and North Streets.

Theft

A dual-axle, galvanized steel trailer with three foot sides and a small solar panel to power hydraulic lifts valued at approximately $14,000 was stolen from a construction site on Cole Road sometime before Thursday morning. An undetermined quantity of tools were stolen from a construction site near Dawson and Willow sometime last weekend. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Victoria Deston at 519-824-1212, ext. 7166, or email her at vdeston [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A New Jersey man had his grey 2023 Chevrolet Suburban stolen from a south end parking lot sometime before Tuesday morning. Personal property including two large suitcases full of clothes was also stolen. Police officers were dispatched to an address on Cardigan Street Monday morning after OnStar tracked a red 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer that had been stolen the night before from Linwood. At 4:39 am on Monday morning, a man described as wearing a light-coloured hoodie with the hood up, grey pants, black shoes with white laces, an Under Armour backpack and a hat smashed the glass door of a business near Willow and Westwood with an unknown tool. A 32-year-old Hamilton man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possessing a controlled substance, breaching probation and driving while suspended after he was caught shoplifting at a Woodlawn store by an off-duty police officer. During a search, police recovered stolen property and a small amount of suspected meth. And the suspect’s motorcycle? Stolen.

Traffic

A 35-year-old is charged with being an occupant in a stolen motor vehicle and breaching probation after being arrested in connection with an incident on August 17 when a stolen Dodge Caravan rammed a police cruiser. Police are still looking for the make driver.


A 25-year-old man is charged with careless driving and failing to remain at a collision after striking a sign on Clair Road near Gordon tearing off the front bumper and grille in the process. Less than 30 minutes later, that driver also his a parked car on Goodwin.

Other Notes

Police are asking for help to find the man pictured here. On August 1 at 4:20 am, an adult woman reported to police that she was sitting outside her residence near Alma and Willow when this man approached her asked if he could masturbate in front of her. She said no, but then he started to do it anyway. The person in question is described as a younger black male, six feel tall with a thin build and wearing a white t-shirt and green plaid pants. A woman wanted on two different outstanding warrants was arrested at Guelph Police headquarters when she came in to file a complaint against someone else. Officers recognized her and knew her to be wanted for twice failing to appear in court on charges including possessing stolen property and driving while prohibited. She was arrested on the warrants and two new charges of failing to comply with court orders.


A 52-year-old Guelph man was charged with obstructing police and driving a vehicle with open alcohol after a traffic stop on Wednesday near Edinburgh and Municipal. He ended up not being impaired himself, but he did have an open bottle of vodka on the passenger seat under a blanket and he refused to comply with police during the stop.
