POLICE NOTES: Big Drug Bust, Hate Crime Investigation, and Officers Assaulted

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

At around 2:30 am on Sunday, emergency services were called to Norfolk and Macdonell where a group of friends were sitting on some stairs when they were approached by several men who yelled homophobic slurs at them. The altercation turned physical and an adult woman from Mississauga was punched in the face by one of then man, causing a laceration which required several stitches. A 51-year-old Guelph man was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon for an incident in the early morning of March 26 this year. An adult man struck another man in the back of the head with an empty beer bottle as they exited a business near Speedvale and Silvercreek. The victim then turned around and the suspect proceeded to punch him in the forehead before two other men intervened.


A 62-year-old Guelph man was charged with sexual assault after an employee of a downtown business reported that a client approached her and touched her inappropriately.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of assault police, resisting arrest, disarming an officer, obstructing police, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing break-in instruments and several counts of breaching court orders.

Last Saturday afternoon, police responded to a parking lot on Willow after receiving several reports of a male passed out in a vehicle. When officers arrived, the man awoke and become combative; he tried to grab one officer’s conducted energy weapon, which forced the other officer to use their conducted energy weapon. The two officers took minor injuries, but they did recover a small amount of suspected crystal meth, several bullets, cash and various tools consistent with breaking and entering. The car also turned out to be stolen.

Break-Ins

A 25-year-old Guelph woman was charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property and failing to comply with a release order for an incident last month where a man and a woman broke into an underground parking lot on Watson Road North and removed items from one of the vehicles parked there. It was also confirmed that they were driving a stolen vehicle.

Drugs

Guelph Police served search warrants on three residences and three businesses in Guelph on Wednesday following an investigation into two men believed to be trafficking drugs in the city. By the time the spoils were counted, police recovered approximately seven kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $780,000, a half-kilogram of MDMA valued at nearly $40,000 and large quantities of dried cannabis, cannabis products and anabolic steroids. They also seized more than $27,000 in cash, a Glock semi-automatic handgun with high-capacity magazine, a replica handgun and a functioning conducted energy weapon. (See above.)

A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing proceeds of crime and possession of illicit cannabis, and a 33-year-old Breslau man was charged with 11 counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling and several firearms charges. Both were held for bail hearings on Thursday.

Impaired Driving

A 24-year-old Kitchener man was charged with impaired driving, and his licence was suspended for 90 day after officers found the man sleeping in his car outside the Manor. He was unsteady on his feet, and he failed a roadside breath test.


A 60-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited, plus his licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was seized after a traffic stop on Monday afternoon. After an intoxicated man left a location on Woolwich Street, Guelph Police found the man’s car outside a business on Woodlawn Road and they witnessed him getting into the driver’s seat.


A 19-year-old Caledon man was charged with impaired driving, refusing a breath sample, driving while prohibited, driving without insurance and using an unauthorized licence plate. On Sunday night, police were called to Couling Crescent where a witness observed a motorcycle strike a parked car. Not only was there clear signs of impairment, but an investigation revealed that he was a prohibited driver. He refused to give police a breath sample, and he was taken to the hospital after complaining of minor injuries related to the collision.

Theft

A blue 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was taken from a residential parking lot near Willow and Silvercreek sometime between July 18 and August 3. If you have any information, call Constable Firas El-Ayoubi at 519-824-1212 ext. 7129, or email him at felayoubi [at] guelphpolice.ca.


On Wednesday morning, police found an unoccupied red 2022 Toyota Highlander parked in a residential parking lot near Janefield and Scottsdale. The rear passenger window was smashed out and investigation revealed that the car had been stolen on July 30. A 39-year-old Guelph woman  was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breaching probation. On Tuesday evening, members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit found a Porsche SUV which had previously been reported stolen in the area of Fife Road. BEAT watched the car for an hour and arrested the woman when she approached the car and unlocked it.


A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000, three counts of possessing identity documents and breaching probation on Monday afternoon. Members of the BEAT Unit observed a male driving a 2020 Ford Edge in the area of Neeve and Fountain, and they were able to confirm it was stolen. A small amount of suspected crystal meth and property including identification in various names was found inside the vehicle.


A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft under $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing an unauthorized weapon and breaching probation after an investigation. Early on Saturday morning, a man entered the porch of an address near the downtown and stole a battery from a mobility scooter, rending the scooter inoperable. Police caught up with the man Monday evening, and during a search a quantity of suspected crystal meth, cash, scales and other drug paraphernalia as well as a switchblade knife were found on him.

Traffic

A 32-year-old Guelph woman was charged with speeding and stunt driving after police conducted a traffic stop Thursday evening when she was caught speeding 95 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone. Her driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days, and her vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

Other Notes

Police are looking to talk to a white man in his 60s with grey and brown slicked-back hair wearing a blue shirt and grey pants after officers were called to Guelph Central Station at 7:30 pm last Saturday. A man told police that he was riding the bus when he observed another man using his cellphone to take photos of a nine-year-old girl. The witness advised the girl’s mother and the two confronted the male, who exited the bus near Paisley and Imperial. A 58-year-old Guelph man was charged with fail to appear in court after police caught up with him on Wednesday night. The suspect missed court for two charges – mischief under $5,000, and fail to comply with undertaking – last month.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with fail to appear in court after he was arrested downtown on Wednesday afternoon. He missed a court date in January to answer for a variety of charges including operation while impaired, drive while suspended, novice driver – blood alcohol concentration above zero, drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor, operate motor vehicle without insurance, and drive vehicle with cannabis in open original packaging.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with mischief and breaching probation after he was seen yelling nonsensically and throwing rocks at an apartment on Wyndham Street North 30 minutes after police told him to move along.
