POLICE NOTES: Gun Warning, Stolen SUVs and 84 Refunds

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Warning About Illegal Guns in Guelph

After finding two loaded hand guns during a drug trafficking investigation on May 25, two rifles and several real and replica firearms in another investigation on June 1, and a loaded Glock 9mm handgun on a 20-year-old suspect who was arrested on July 5, Guelph Police are noting that they’re encountering illegal firearms more often.

“Our community has seen a disturbing number of firearm-related offences in recent weeks. This presents increased risks for our citizens and our members,” said Chief Gord Cobey in a statement. “We will continue to work to identify and disrupt the activities of those involved in these illegal activities.”

Assault

A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault, theft under $5,000 and breaching probation after he allegedly punched a store employee in the neck when a woman tried to flee with $300 worth of product in a shopping cart.


A 45-year-old Guelph man was arrested Monday and charged with break and enter, mischief under $5,000 and assault for a June 8 incident at a Campbell Road business. A man smashed a glass door with his hand before leaving the area, and then went to a second business nearby where he was confronted an employee who tried to escort the man from the business. The employee was assaulted and sustained minor injuries.

Break-Ins

Police are looking for information about a break-in at a home near Victoria and Eastview. On Thursday afternoon, the homeowner, who’s in the process of moving to another city, came home after a few days to find a bedroom screen removed and the window unlocked. Several packed boxes had been rummaged through, but it’s unknown if anything was stolen; a computer was removed from the home and found outside in a wagon that had been taken from a shed. A home under renovation was entered in the area of Woodlawn and Victoria sometime overnight before Wednesday morning. A doorknob was broken off the front door and a lockbox was found pried open with the key missing. Minor damage was also done to the interior of the home but a large toolbox containing tools, a Google Nest device and other property was reported missing. Drugs

A 44-year-old Guelph man was charged with failing to appear in court and possessing a controlled substance after emergency services were called to a downtown business last Friday evening. The man was cleared by paramedics and the police identified the man as being wanted for failing to appear in court on charges including break and enter and breaching probation. He had a small amount of fentanyl on him when the police took him into custody.


A 43-year-old Guelph woman was charged under the Liquor Licence and Control Act with knowingly supplying liquor to persons under 19 last Friday. Police were called to a residence near Victoria and York where several teens were outside fighting. It turns out that the woman had provided liquor to her daughter’s 14-year-old birthday party.

Fraud

An 18-year-old Guelph woman is charged with 84 counts of fraud under $5,000 after a south end retail business reported some suspicious transactions in mid-June; 84 refunds were credited to two debit or credit cards belonging to an employee totalling more than $11,500. The employee, who had worked for the business for nearly two years, has since been let go.

Impaired Driving

A 31-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days after police spotted a man who appeared unsteady on his feet walking up to his car early on Sunday morning in the area of Gordon and Kortright.

Theft

Three high-end sport utility vehicles were stolen on Tuesday morning. A silver 2021 Lexus RX350 was stolen from Harvard Road sometime before 8 am on Tuesday morning, then a red 2021 Toyota Highlander was taken from a home near Victoria and MacAlister at around the same time, while a white 2014 Acura RDX was discovered missing Tuesday at a Woodlawn Road dealership. On Monday afternoon, a resident near Goodwin and Wilkie reported that two suspicious men were caught on camera overnight checking out his 2023 Highlander. One of the men entered the vehicle and removed several pieces of trim in an attempt to access the vehicle’s wiring causing approximately $2,000 in damage. The men were both described as white and wearing light-coloured hoodies, darker pants and hats. One had a heavier build and was also wearing a bandana over his face. The second had a thinner build. Police are looking for a white male, 40 to 50 years of age with grey shaggy hair and a grey goatee wearing a black and olive striped coat, black pants, black shoes, sunglasses and multiple rings on his hands who broke into a business at York and Menzie last Saturday morning at 8:20 am where he stole a quantity of cash. An 18-year-old Toronto man was charged with two counts of dangerous driving, two counts of failing to remain at a collision, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and obstructing police after the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace they were driving was discovered to be stolen. The car was involved in a collision at Wellington and Neeve at 3:30 am on Tuesday. An 18-year-old Guelph woman was also charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Traffic

A 51-year-old Fergus woman was charged with driving while prohibited and two counts of driving while suspended after a traffic stop on Neeve Street on Wednesday afternoon.


A 34-year-old Toronto male was charged with theft over $5,000 and dangerous driving on Tuesday afternoon after the staff of a Woodlawn Road business reported a theft in progress. The suspect had taken approximately $700 worth of dental products and tried to flee the scene. When police stopped the car they found another $6,700 in stolen product in two bags.


A 39-year-old Guelph man was charged with flight from police and several Highway Traffic Act offences after police saw a man riding a gas-powered moped without a helmet on Lane Street. The officer attempted to stop the man but he drove onto a sidewalk and then into a park to evade the officer. When the moped was stopped on Meyer Drive, it was learned the driver was wanted by police in another jurisdiction and he was arrested.

Other Notes

A 42-year-old Guelph woman is charged with breaching an undertaking and breaching a probation order after she accidentally dialed 9-1-1. Officers went to address provided by the woman and placed her under arrest, at which point she was found in the company of a man she had been ordered to stay away from.


A 32-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of failing to comply with a release order after he was apparently twice spotted in the same area around Waterloo and Edinburgh. Both times he appeared to be following people back to their home. The first time, it was two women who were walking home at 2 am on July 8 and then it was a man and a woman in the early morning of July 11.
