POLICE NOTES: Caught Sleepers, Hatchet Men, and Stolen Wheels

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Police are looking for a man who walked up to a drive-thru window at business near Woodlawn and Imperial Monday night and asked for a free coffee. When he didn’t get one, the man tried to remove the debit machine and then went to the front door where staff locked it to bar him entry. The man then brandished a hatchet and waved it over his head. The suspect is described as a white male, 35 years old, brown hair and wearing a black top, jeans and white shoes. We left the area riding a blue bike and carrying bags. A 40-year-old Guelph man was charged with Weapons Dangerous, Fail To Comply With Probation, Solicit In Aggressive Manner, Enter Premise When Entry Prohibited after soliciting in a drive-thru line at York and Victoria on Thursday morning with a knife. Police found the man inside the business, which he had previously been barred from entering, and a search revealed two knives, a pellet gun and a hatchet.


A 25-year-old woman was charged with Uttering Threats To Cause Death after two neighbours in the area of Speedvale and Woolwich got into a dispute over their pets on Tuesday. One woman sent the victim seven threatening text messages between 12:45 pm and 1:24 pm including one that said she was going to kill her with a knife.


A 52-year-old Guelph male has been charged with Assault With A Weapon after two men got into an argument in a parking lot downtown Tuesday. The argument escalated with one man punching the victim twice in the head, and then picking up a large rock and striking the victim in the head with it.

Break-Ins

Someone broke into a home near Arkell and Gordon sometime on Thursday between 10 am and 5 pm. Various pieces of property were taken including a Bulova watch, and a DSLR camera with lenses. A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with Carry Concealed Weapon, Possession Of A Controlled Substance – Schedule I, Breach Probation x2, and Having Liquor In An Open Container In An Unauthorized Place. The charges stem from a June break in at a residence near Willow and Edinburgh, and the suspect was also wanted for break and enter and four counts of breach of probation. A police search revealed a folding knife and 2.57 grams of crystal meth.

Drugs

A 25-year-old York woman was charged with two counts of Possession For The Purpose Of Trafficking – Schedule I after police found 21 grams of fentanyl, 23.21 grams of crystal meth and a digital scale in her fanny pack. Police were called to scene after getting reports of a woman asleep in the driver’s seat of a parked car in a lot near Paisley and Imperial.


A 26-year-old Brampton man has been charged with Possession Of Property Obtained By Crime Over $5,000, three counts of Possession Of Property Obtained By Crime Under $5,000, two counts of Possession Of An Identity Document, Possession Of Credit Card, Possession Of A Controlled Substance – Schedule I, and Possession Of Over 30 Grams Of Dried Cannabis In A Public Place. After police were called to a downtown parking lot on Saturday morning about a man sleeping in the driver seat of a running car, it turned out that the car itself was stolen. Police found identity documents not in the man’s name, a bank card not in the male’s name, 0.27 grams of heroin, 44.87 grams of cannabis, and various pieces of stolen property.

Theft

A silver 2013 Ford Taurus was taken from a business at Paisley and Elmira on Thursday after someone took the car keys off the counter sometime between 4:45 pm and 7 pm. A black 2022 Lexus RX 350 was taken from the driveway of a residence located near the intersection of Kortright and Edinburgh sometime overnight on Thursday. If you have any information, call Special Constable Tim Jotham at 519-824-1212 ext. 7184, email him at tjotham [at] guelphpolice.ca.


An electronic wheelchair was taken from out front of a downtown bank sometime between 3 pm on Sunday and 11 am on Monday. The wheelchair is described as black with a yellow controller, and that the joystick on the wheelchair turns blue, white, and yellow when it is turned on. Two adult men went to a business near Stone and Edinburgh where they used bolt cutters to cut the lock off an unattended bicycle and took it. The bike is described as a maroon mountain bike with the words “Rocky Mountain” in yellow writing. It is valued at $2,000. The first suspect is male, white, 5’10 to 6’ tall wearing a blue baseball hat and blue shirt and carrying a large purple duffle bag. The second is a white man wearing a blue hat, black t-shirt, long black shorts, black socks, and black sandals and holding a green grocery bag. A black 2022 Honda HR-V was taken from a residence near Grange and Starwood sometime between 9 pm last Friday and 11 am last Saturday. If you have an information, call Special Constable Drew Neil at 519-824-1212, or email him at dneil [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with Theft Under $5,000 for the theft of an employee’s purse from a stone at Silvercreek and Speedvale back on Sunday June 24.


A 28-year-old Toronto man and a 24-year-old Guelph man were both charged with Possession Of Stolen Property Over $5,000 after police found them sitting in a stolen vehicle in a parking lot near Wellington and Waterloo on Wednesday night. The Toronto man was also charged with Drive Vehicle With Cannabis Readily Available after a package of pot was found in the centre console.

Traffic

A 46-year-old Cambridge man was charged with Speeding and Stunt Driving after police caught him doing 118 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone near Woodlawn and Michener. (See above.)

Other Notes

Sometime between 10 pm on Wednesday and 9 am on Thursday, a brown 2005 Toyota Corolla parked in a residential parking lot near Imperial and Speedvale was damaged. The vehicle’s starter lines were cut, the hood’s latching mechanism was damaged, and the roof was dented. A white rug and a box of DVDs was also taken. A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with Fail To Appear In Court on a variety of charges including assault and assault causing bodily harm. Police caught up with him on Wednesday morning downtown.


A 44-year-old Guelph woman has been charged with Fail To Appear after missing a June 30 court date for an arson charge.


A 54-year-old Guelph man has been charged with Indecent Act after he removed his shorts and exposed himself to people and families at the Market Squared splash pad.


A 37-year-old Guelph woman was charged with Fail To Attend Court after missing a court date on June 30 for charges like break and enter and motor vehicle theft.
