POLICE NOTES: Another Big Drug Bust, Boat Fire Vandals, and Perfume Heist

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, uttering death threats, carrying a concealed weapon, possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of breaching court orders after a Tuesday morning conflict in the lobby of a Carden Street apartment building. A man was threatened and punched in the face over an outstanding debt.


A 27-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault, carrying a concealed weapon and disobeying a court order after an altercation downtown Wednesday morning. Two men who were both known to each other got into a verbal argument at Wyndham and Macdonell, and one of the men turned to leave when the other spit on him and punched him in the shoulder.

Break-Ins

Police are investigating after a glass door was smashed at a Silvercreek North restaurant. The break-in was discovered at 9 am on Wednesday when a passerby noticed the broken door; cash and two tablets were reported stolen. A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with unlawfully being in a dwelling, mischief under $5,000 and breaching probation for a break-in at a downtown apartment on Monday. Nothing was stolen, but $500 worth of damage was done in the commission of the crime.

Drugs

Three Guelph males – aged 50, 44 and 28 – face a long list of drug and weapons charges after police executed search warrants at the warehouse property as well as a residence in Guelph in the early morning on June 1. An investigation had been underway since April with a tip about drug trafficking that led Guelph Police to the north end where they observed the three men attending a warehouse on an almost daily basis.

During the raid, police recovered large amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine, GHB, Oxycodone and other controlled substances were seized. The estimated value of the substances is $292,000. They also seized was approximately $250,000 in suspected stolen property including tools, motorcycles and ATVs as well as a $100,000 skid steer which has been returned to its owner. Officers also located two rifles and several real and replica firearms.

In the last two months, police have recovered $1.4 million in controlled substances, almost $300,000 in cash, six real and several replica firearms and more than $300,000 in other offence-related property from three different raids.

Impaired Driving

A 53-year-old woman from Victoria, B.C. was charged with impaired operation and failing to stop at a collision for a hit and run Tuesday afternoon. A motorist was rear-ended at a red light on Woolwich and Marilyn, and when police caught up with the suspected driver, a test revealed that they had more than the legal limit of alcohol in their system. Her driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for seven days.


A 54-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired operation, and her licence was suspended for 90 days after the staff of an east end business at 3:30 pm on Sunday called police saying that a woman had consumed several drinks before going to pick up her 10-year-old from a nearby business. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver was found to have more than the legal limit of alcohol in her system.


A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with refusing to comply with a breath demand and several charges under the Highway Traffic Act. Early last Saturday morning, Guelph Police stopped a possible impaired driver downtown who refused several times to provide a breath sample. Also, his vehicle had no  mufflers and one rear tire was completely bald.

Theft

Police Service is investigating after a Vancouver Drive resident had her necklace and bracelet stolen in a distraction theft Sunday afternoon. The driver was described as a male, approximately 60 with brown skin, a heavy build, short black hair and a dark shirt. The other suspect is female, approximately 50 with brown skin, a heavy build and short dark hair. They were driving a newer black pickup similar to a Ram. Last Saturday evening, a male and female separately entered a business on Silvercreek Parkway North, and while the female distracted an employee, the male stole keys from the counter area and opened the locked cabinet, stealing a $8,400 of Dior perfumes. The male was described as white with dark hair and wearing a yellow knitted sweater, blue jeans and black sunglasses and carrying a green bag. The female was described as possibly Middle Eastern with long brown hair and wearing a white t-shirt, faded jeans, sunglasses and a black purse. A white 2022 Lexus RX 350 was stolen from the parking lot of a south-end hotel sometime around 5 am on Thursday. A GPS tracker showed the vehicle stopped in Puslinch shortly after it was stolen, and police found the discarded tracker and some of the victim’s personal property on a lawn. A vehicle went off the road and collided with a boat in a private driveway near Victoria and Norma at 1:35 am on Wednesday morning.  The vehicle, which had been stolen from Niagara Region, was not operable after the collision, and several people were seen fleeing the car. One woman suffering from a medical issue was found in a nearby area by the canine unit, but the investigation is ongoing. Traffic

Police are investigating after an SUV struck another vehicle while fleeing from police Thursday afternoon. At 2:40 pm an officer was patrolling in the area of Silvercreek and Woodlawn when a white BMW X3 driving in front of the cruiser suddenly accelerated, and sideswiped another vehicle as it continued southbound on Silvercreek. The BMW had Quebec licence plates and was occupied by three black males in their 20s. Police are looking to speak to the owner of a white Tesla after a teenager was struck downtown Wednesday afternoon at around 5 pm. A 15-year-old female was crossing Gordon at Wellington  when she was struck by the Tesla while making a turn and causing sustained minor injuries. The male driver of the Tesla stopped briefly then left the scene without exchanging information. A 47-year-old Guelph woman and 37-year-old Guelph man were both transported to hospital in Hamilton after they were both struck by an SUV near downtown Tuesday night. The two were crossing Gordon Street south of Waterloo when they were struck by a northbound Jeep Cherokee, which remained on the scene.  The collision remains under investigation, so if you have any information call Constable Tim Paneghel of the Traffic Unit at 519-824-1212, ext. 7529, or email tpaneghel [at] guelphpolice.ca.


An 18-year-old Rockwood man was charged with stunt driving, and his licence was suspended for 30 days after he was caught doing nearly twice the speed limit on Stone Road East. Adding insult to injury, he was speeding in his mother’s car, which was impounded for two weeks.


A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving, and his driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days after he was caught doing twice the speed limit on Woolwich near Marilyn around noon on Thursday.


An 18-year-old Clifford man was charged with failing to stop at an accident and careless driving for a hit-and-run in April where an adult man suffered minor injuries after being struck in the intersection at Macdonell and Wyndham.

Other Notes

Two 14-year-old Guelph males were arrested last weekend and charged with arson for the April 26 arson of a boat in the parking lot near Eramosa and Stevenson.
