MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Advisory Committee Meeting for October 2, 2025

There’s not as much action at October’s Heritage Advisory Committee as you might expect as we’re counting down to the deletion of all properties listed on the heritage registry. Still, one proposed designation has made the cut for discussion while a property owner living in the city’s one current heritage district wants to make some changes. Let’s dig into the brief agenda for this month’s heritage brief.

NOTE #1: If you would like to delegate to one of the items at the meeting, or to access an alternative meeting format, get in touch with Jack Mallon, Heritage Planner, by email at jack.mallon [at] guelph.ca or by calling (519) 837-5616, extension 3872. Deadline is September 29 at noon.

NOTE #2: This meeting will take place in-person at City Hall and virtually on Microsoft Teams. You can find the link on the agenda page for this meeting on the City’s website.

19 London Rd E: Draft Council Designation Report – Situated just east of Woolwich Street, the original stone residence dates back to 1869 and has passed through several hands over the decades and centuries. It’s “representative of a nineteenth-century limestone residence built in the Neo-Classical style of architecture,” according to the staff report, and it meets four of the nine prescribed criteria for determining cultural heritage value or interest, according to Ontario Regulation 9/06 as amended by 569/22. It’s also notable that this designation was started at the invitation of the property owner.

66 Mary Street: Heritage Permit Application – The owners of this home in the Brooklyn and College Hill Heritage Conservation District want to add a fulls second storey and a new attic to this building that dates back to pre-World War I Guelph. The plan will retain and repair the porch, preserve the mature tree and the detached garage from the 1920s, and new windows that are historically appropriate. Staff find the proposal consistent with the district’s guidelines and supportive of proper heritage conservation.
