MEETING PREVIEW: Guelph Public Library Board for February 26, 2024

As usual, we get to the end of the month and the regularly scheduled meeting of the Guelph Public Library Board of Directors. This month is a kind of special occasion, a sad occasion, because this is the last meeting for CEO Steve Kraft after a 41-year illustrious career in the library business in Guelph. Still, much of the meeting will be looking to the future, both the short and the long-term.

NOTE #1: This meeting will take place in Programming Room at the Main Library on Norfolk Street, but you can also watch it on video via Cisco Webex. (Find the link on the library board’s webpage.)

NOTE #2: The meeting begins at 6 pm and is expected to wrap up around 8 pm.

NOTE #3: The Library does not make the complete agenda with reports available to the public, only the point form agenda.

Consent Agenda – All the usual reports are here, from the CEO’s report (which will be Steve Kraft’s last report as CEO before retiring), to updates about the new library and the new strategic plan, service capacity and utilization reports, and the 2023 annual review report.

CLOSED MEETING:

Although the in-camera portion of the library board meeting usually takes place at the end of the agenda, it’s here in the exact middle of this meeting instead. Also of interest is the fact there there are three reasons listed for this closed session: a proposed or pending acquisition or disposition of land by the board; labour relations or employee negotiations; and advice that is subject to solicitor-client privilege, including communications necessary for that purpose

Presentations & Reports – Much of this portion of the meeting will deal with the communications plan, and presumably that’s going to be around the main library project with particular emphasis on fundraising. The board will also talk about the 2023 evaluation of themselves and look at the staff workplan for the current year.

Unfinished Business – There’s one piece of unfinished business, and that is the formation of the 2024 board committees.
