MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for January 29, 2024

Two Heritage Guelph meetings in the same month? What a treat! This one will focus on one of the two ongoing Heritage Conservation District studies happening now at the city, the one that’s focused on Downtown. Once again, the heritage committee will be asked to bring their discerning eye to the plan so far, including the proposed boundaries for the exact area of the district.

NOTE #1: If you would like to access an alternative meeting format, contact heritage planner Jack Mallon at jack.mallon [at] guelph.ca or by calling (519) 837-5616, ext. 3872.

NOTE #2: This meeting will take place virtually on Cisco Webex. You can find the link on the agenda page for this meeting on the City’s website.

Downtown Heritage Conservation District Workshop #2 – A lot of thoughts were shared in the first Heritage Guelph workshop on the Downtown Heritage Conservation District back in September, and those thoughts will be further refined as we head into this last workshop before a staff report goes to city council. One of the things that the committee will be asked to comment on is the recommended boundary for the proposed district.

As noted on the above map and its red line, the original study area was slightly smaller in terms of total area. The proposed boundary is in purple and now extends south to Fountain Street and includes the Allan’s Dam, John Galt Park and areas of downtown south of the tracks between Gordon and Woolwich. In the north, the boundary now includes the Baker District area, Yarmouth Street, and Kimberly Park. According to the consultants working on the HCD, the boundary both captures John Galt’s original plan for the core from 1827 and demonstrates the evolution of Guelph over 200 years with its various unique buildings and streetscapes.

After Heritage Guelph delivers its feedback at this meeting, the consultants will collect all the feedback from them and the various community engagement groups, and they will also gather feedback from local Indigenous communities. The next step after that is to take a report to city council.
