MEETING PREVIEW: Guelph Police Services Board for July 18, 2024

July’s meeting of the Guelph Police Services Board promises to be relatively light compared to the last few months (or for the months to come for that matter). Still, if you’re interested in crime busting matters beyond the role of the police, this should be a compelling meeting with a special guest appearance, and there also might be some interesting developments from the Chief’s report. Here’s the deal…

NOTE: This meeting takes place virtually at 2:30 pm but it will be broadcast on Guelph Police’s YouTube page.

PRESENTATIONS:

Sarah Bowers-Peter, Program Co-ordinator of Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington, will present her annual report from the program.

Human Resources Report: Member Appointments – Quite a slate of new hires this month including two new Communicator/Dispatchers, a Human Resources Advisor, and six members of the 2024 summer student Youth in Policing Initiative eight-week program.

2023 Final Financial Variance Report – As you might have seen at June’s council meeting, the 2023 audited financial statements were approved, including the ones for the Guelph Police Service. The service had a surplus of nearly $37,000 last year.

Professional Standards Quarterly Report – In this last quarter, there were 15 new public complaints; 10 were screened out, five went to professional standards, and four are still ongoing joining two other complaints from previous quarters that are also still ongoing. There were no new investigations initiated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and two ongoing cases were resolved. Also, the were six new internal investigations, and one ongoing investigation continued while new hearing dates have been set for the third quarter regarding a matter that began in 2018.

Board Correspondence Report – Sorry, no correspondences this month.

Community Account Report – Presently, there’s nearly $76,000 in the Community Account. The board distributed nearly $7,900 in funds to various community groups in the last year including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph, Torchlight Services, the Bengali Community of Guelph, the Beyond Boarders Inspire Event, and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition.

Chief’s Monthly Report – As usual, Guelph Police Services Chief Gord Cobey will deliver a verbal report about the latest goings on at 15 Wyndham Street South.
