MEETING PREVIEW: Guelph Police Services Board for December 14, 2023

It’s Christmas time for the Guelph Police Services Board and they are giving us the gift of brevity. This month’s meeting will be largely focused on administrative matters, new hires, new committees, meeting dates and formats, plus the usual verbal update from Chief Gord Cobey. Open up YouTube and get one last bit of police business (at a board level) before taking the rest of the year off.

NOTE: This meeting takes place virtually at 2:30 pm but it will be broadcast on Guelph Police’s YouTube page.

Human Resources: Member Appointments – There are three new hires for the board to approve this month, two permanent, and one temporary co-op placement.

Board Subcommittee Appointments for 2024 – If it’s December, that means it’s time for the board to look at committee composition. There are four committees of the board including Collective Bargaining, Finance, Police Review, and Performance Appraisal. The board will have to decide if they want, or need, to make some changes.

Board Correspondence Report – There were two incoming letters this month, both pertaining to the Guelph Police Services Budget.

Appointment of Board Chair and Vice-Chair for 2024 – In other December business, the board must re-affirm the chair and the vice-chair of the board. Presently, in case you’re unaware, the chair of the board is Peter McSherry and the vice-chair is Jane Armstrong.

Board Meeting Dates and Format – The date of the monthly board meetings will remain unchanged at the third Thursday of the month except for December, and once again there will be no August meeting. It will be up to the board to decide how they want to continue though because there have been upgrades to the Emergency Operations Training
Centre that will allow the meetings to be broadcast on YouTube while also letting the board meting in -person again.

Chief’s Monthly Report – As usual, Guelph Police Services Chief Gord Cobey will deliver a verbal report about the latest goings on at 15 Wyndham Street South.
