MEETING PREVIEW: Accessibility Advisory Committee for October 2, 2023

The Accessibility Advisory Committee usually meets every other month, but in October we’re getting two different AAC meetings. Why are we so lucky? Well, this meeting is exclusively about potential voting options for the next municipal election in 2026. Members of the committee will workshop the various options, give their expert feedback and then leave it staff to come back with… Well, why ruin the surprise?

NOTE #1: This meeting will take place in Meeting Room A at City Hall, but you can also watch it on video via Cisco Webex. (Find the link on the meeting agenda.)

NOTE #2: Accessibility-related accommodations available upon timely request to Sarah Cunneyworth 519-822-1260 extension 3536; TTY 519-826-9771 email: accessibility [at] guelph.ca.

NOTE #3: The meeting begins at 5:30 pm and is expected to wrap up around 7:30 pm.

NOTE #4: This is a special meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Committee. The regular meeting will take place as schedule on Tuesday October 17 at 3 pm.

Committee Workshop for Municipal Election Recommendation – For the last year, the Accessibility Advisory Committee has been going back and forth with staff about recommending alternative voting methods for the next municipal election. The clerks office have been exploring multiple options, some of which have been used in the past including internet voting, vote from home, vote by mail, vote by phone, and remote accessible vote by mail.

Sarah Nicole Martin will facilitate a conversation between members of the AAC and the clerks office to look at all those options, their risks and benefits, and the experiences of other municipalities using them. Staff will take the committee feedback from this workshop meeting and use it to develop a draft motion that will be brought to the October 17 meeting, and then a final motion will come to the AAC at the December meeting. Ultimately, the AAC’s recommendation will be referred to council, since they have the finally say in directing staff to initiate voting methods.
